TEMPS, should I be worried?

Kingetula

IT'S GOOD TO BE KING
Ok, so I got rid of the heat lamps and am now using heat mats. The temp on the glass under the aspen is now reading 88.4F. The rest of the cage is around 82F during the day. When I place my hand on the glass it feel mildly warm but not even close to hot. I use a rheostat and even all the way on the low end it still gets 88.F hot. I know I could turn it off during the day and use it in winter only but I might return it, don't know if will still get this hot during the winter. It's night time and the house is 75F and the temp is still at 88F. Is 88F a big deal just around the heating pad area or should I return the rheostat?

88 is a bit high. You want the temps around 75-85 on the glass. I suggest getting a thermostat so you don't have to mess with temputures if the room changes temputure.

Stop trying to go cheap and just get a thermostat already, as has been suggested in the other thread on this topic that you started. The ZooMed Thermostat with probe is only $23 or so online. Just make sure you get one with a probe, the cheaper model without a probe does not work.

What kind of rheostat are you using? The ones I use can get the UTH temp to just a degree or too above room temp. Of course, if your room is 86...

88 is not hot enough to burn the snake, so no worries there. Corns do seem to prefer cooler temps though.

You don't really NEED a thermostat unless your house temps fluctuate a lot. A good rheostat will work fine.

ZOO MED 500 deluxe.

It held the temp at 85.F overnight. At 8:00AM the temp started to climb so I desided to turn it off during day and see how that goes, 76F off (room temp at the moment) My room temp peaks around 81F to 82F @ 1 or 2 pm. It's not the greatest rheostat in the world I see. If I leave it on during the day, as I said 89F to 90F. I am returning it and going to try the light dimmer, again.

If your room temp is 82 then you do not need any extra heat!

I was thinking more towards NIGHT and WINTER times than summer daytime temps. If I can't control the darn thing like I want, what good is it, I want something I have control over. If I want temps at 75F or 90F that shouldn't be a problem, with this Zoo Med Rheostat it was set to low and did what it wanted, I had no choice but to watch my temps hit 89F on the lowest setting. I feel a Rheostat at the lowest setting should turn it off, a few clicks to the HIGH range should turn it on somewhere in the 75F range at minimum and not 89F.

For now, you really don't need to worry about heat. Last year I had my UTHs turned off all summer and my snakes did fine. My temps stay in the upper 70's day and night and I didn't have a single regurge. Even if it dips a bit at night, it is no problem Maybe turn your heat mat on at night after feeding and don't worry about it any other time. This will give you time to get your heating straightened out before winter comes.

I picked those LIGHT DIMMERS up today, 100 X better than the Zoo Med Rheostat. Thanks to whoever it was that told me about them.
