I have had my snake for about a year and I am DEFINATELY by no means an expert.
When I was starting out it was hard for me to find out what terms used when talking about a snake meant what, Here are a few terms that the more experienced viewers may use that u've never heard of (or aren't quite sure what they mean).
Albino- another name for an amelanistic snake
Aberrant--a pattern which is substantially different from the normal markings
Amelanistic-- snakes that lack black pigment in both skin and eyes as a result of the absence of melanin. Red and orange may appear.
Anerythristic-- snakes that lack red pigment as a result of mutation. Primarily marked with greys. Yellow and brown may appear.
Black albino--Name occasionally used for anerythristic corn snakes.
Blue--Refers to the hazy blue coloring of the eyes prior to shedding.
Brumation/Hibernation--a slow cooling down by breeders of mature snakes to create a simulation of the change of seasons to promote breeding responses. Sometimes called "overwintering".
CB (captive born)-- a snake that is produced by the breeding of two captively kept animals.
Crepuscular-means predominantly active at dusk or before dawn.
Diurnal--means predominantly active during the day time.
Fuzzies--baby mice that have fur and are able to walk about.
Gravid--a term for a female who is full of eggs (pregnant)
Ghost-- snakes that are both hypomelanistic and anerythristic with softer, muted coloration
Hemipenes--male snake reproductive organs, used in mating.
Herpetology--the scientific study of reptiles & amphibians
Jacobson's Organ--part of the olfactory senses, it is a system of nerve endings in the snakes mouth where scent particles brought in by the tongue are then passed over this organ to identify smells.
Leucistic--an all white snake with dark eyes and no pattern.
Morph--(color morph) a color variation
0.0.0--a system used by breeders to express the sex ratio of a group of snakes the first digit all the way to the left is always the males, the middle shows the females and the far right are unsexed animals.
Oviparous--refering to snakes that lay eggs, ie; pythons and colubrids.
Pinkies--or pink mice, newborn baby mice that have no visible fur yet, with closed eyes
Probed/sexed--the determination of sex in reptiles by experts using long slim "probes" inserted into the cloaca and measured to determine the presence or absence of hemipenes.
Red albino--Name sometimes used for amelanistic corn snakes.
Snow--Whitish snakes that are the result of a combination of the amelanistic and anerythristic mutations
Striped-- snakes with longitudinal stripes running down the back instead of the normal blotched pattern. Striping is caused by a recessive mutation.
Substrate--the name for whatever material is used to line the bottom of the enclosure ie; newspaper, astro-turf, bark, aspen etc.
Vent--the opening to the cloaca.
White albino--Name sometimes used for snow corn snakes.
Zigzag--Variably patterned animals that often have their dorsal blotches connected together in a way that results in a rather zigzag-like pattern.
Hope this helps you fihure out what some of the more experienced guys are on about.
