Testing New Telephoto Lens

Nanci

My kit lens for the NEX is an 18-55mm. I really want a macro lens, but felt I would get more use out of a modest telephoto lens, since I can already get pretty decent macro shots, but totally miss out on creatures that are far away. The new lens is 55-210mm, so it picks up where the stock lens leaves off.

So I have a couple choices for setting. I can do autofocus, with manual fine-tuning. That's what I chose. Then, I can shoot in anti-blur mode. I did that for the last couple pics.

First we have the new house way across the street.

Then a crow, who left before I could get the 55mm shot. That's 210, cropped.

Then, my poor pool which has a leak, at 55 (the limit of the stock lens) and 210. The 210mm is not cropped.

Then I thought I would try to focus on actual objects. A sun on a hummingbird feeder, and then a rabbit statue out on my little table.

These are autofocus, with manual fine-tuning. 55mm and 210 mm.

Then, I switched to the anti-blur mode and tried REALLY HARD to focus, manually, but I don't have a tripod, so...Still- I'm pretty happy with its first time out.

These are 210mm, cropped.

These are all the elements of my test, shot from the same point, with my iPhone.

See that dead tree, really far back? That's what the crow was in.

Frog, the rabbit is in brumation right now. I don't have to feed him.

Those look good! I would definitely try to find an inexpensive tripod. I love my telephoto lens, but having a tripod really helps.

Also, I love where you live! It's so beautiful.

So I took this lens to Snake Road this spring. I don't know what i thought I was going to see, but it was _okay_ for snakes, but I felt limited in how close I could get, so how well focused I could get.

Then we went to St. Augustine Alligator Farm a couple weeks ago and I wished I would have had it- tons of nesting wading birds, and all I had was my iPhone, because I've already photographed all the crocs a million times...

My "lovely" pool is pea green now, and filled with frogs and tadpoles. No swimming for me again this summer...
