thawing out pinkies/fuzzies

crazyforcorns

hatchling
I've read on some threads that pple thaw the pinkies out in a ziploc..why is that? We just put the pinkie in warm water without a ziploc.

I am assuming once they are fuzzies, the ziploc is just to keep from the fur getting wet.

thanks
Kathy

I don't use ziplock bags, but all of my snakes are used to wet food. I guess it's just personal preference.

I don't use a ziplock either. Especially if I have to get mice from the pet store, I like to make sure any debris off of them. I do dry them of a bit with a paper towel before feeding though.

I don't personally do it, but some people also do this so they can keep the rodent smell of their fingers, less chance of the corn striking :)

The water can "wash" away the scent from the prey. Or some snakes don't like "wet" food.... etc.

Yup! Experienced that too.....yummy! I also just put them in hot water, as I figure the added moisture won't hurt them and might even hydrate them a bit. None of them seem to mind the wet food, although the rescued burmese that I had for a while had to check out the whole rat from top to bottom when I fed it. It had only eaten live it's whole life and couldn't quite figure out why this one was so wet. It did eat it though.

I always use ziplock, just my preferance. I usually take the mouse out in hte morning put it in the fridge in a ziplock then after work throw the bag in the sink and let warm water run on it. Just want to make sure nothing is frozen in the mouse. I kinda anal. to each their own. :)

LOL@defrosting it in the microwave  i would imagine it would start to smell? :shrugs:
i just put the mice in a ziplock bag and fill up a small plastic container with warm wather. then put the end of the ziplock bag with the mice in, in the containter and put the lid on...takes about 10 min for pinkie...15 for fuzzie etc :crazy02:

I don't use a ziplock either. I just plunk the mouse in the warm water, and the snakes don't seem to mind damp mice.

Just one note--wetting a mouse will not wash away its smell any more than swimming will make you smell less like a human.

It does not wash it away completely, no. But it does dull the natural scent. Same as swimming will make you smell less sweaty ( or whatever odour you are sporting, perfume, etc ). Thawing the prey in its own juices as opposed to plunking it in water, will result in much stronger of a scent. Works wonderful for some stubborn feeders who won't accept "washed" food.
