Thawing Pinkies Fast or Slow?

Dudes! :eek1: Don't use your fingers. Fingers look like pinkies, and after holding a mouse, smell like them too. Think about it. My garter got me that way. Pet shops sell bamboo tongs really cheap. Thats what I use to feed my snakes. They work great, and I do wiggle them just to give the snakes some excitment. Some hatchlings are scared of moving prey, so this doesn't work for them. But on topic... make sure they are not too hot. I let mine cool for a moment. I do use the hot tap water method as well.

Thank you everybody for the great advice. I feed Firebolt last night and used the hot water method. I put the pinkie in hot water until it was warm and soft to the touch.
I put the pinkie in the viv in front of her hide. And yes I missed the second feeding too. I left the room for a minute and she ate the pinkie when I was gone. I missed both feedings so far. Maybe one day I will finally see her eat.

One day you should be able to see it. I wish for that you can, it is amazing. I have made a film of one feeding session with Freya and I am so sad (LOL) that I watch it time to time :crazy02:

giver her a plate with her dinner :)

:wavey: Congrats on the feeding Penman.

SUGGESTION : If your going to feed inside Firebolts aquarium try to place a papertowel down or a plastic lid or something so that Firebolt wont ingest substrate while trying to get the pinky in his mouth.

I just took in a small Cal King snake from a friend, to treat for a while. It had ingested too much substrate and has some intestinal blockage. So that is what made me think of telling you :) I am having to soak her 3 to 4 times a day, and massage her and its starting to pass some, but the poor snake shouldnt have to go through all that. We all make mistakes buts its sure nice to learn to through others when we can! :)

Take care !

Thank you I was wondering how to feed her with Aspen in there. I just have newspaper in there now. I have been fighting a cold all week and have not put the aspen yet.

Do anybody know how much to put in there? (thickness)

It is reccomended for several reasons that you remove them from their cage and feed them in temp containers so that is another suggestion.

I genereally give a 1-2 inches of aspen in the aquarium. It does fluff up a bit over time too. but with the extra thickness they can build tunnels, which they seem to like.

I put twice the thickness of Freya so that she has enough to be totally hidden if she wants to.

I feed her tonight, She came right out of the hide and took the pinkie. It was worth the wait. I enjoyed watching it very much.
I was going to take a picture but I did not want to scare her. Maybe next time.

I heat them up fast in hot water. I have too many to feed once I get home from work to let stuff sit for hours at a time. The large mice and rats that I'm feeding would take all day and I think they take the food better when they are warmed to normal mammal body temperature of 100-101/

Very true, it simulates live prey when the body is warm and you wriggle in front of them.
Let's not forget that snakes also rely on heat as well as sent.
