The Basics for a happy Corn Snake

Hi again everyone, since this is a completely different topic I figured I would start a new thread.

I am 17y/o soon to be 18 and no one in my house smokes. I am planning on putting my 55 galon tank in my room, which tends to get a little chilly in the winter and a little hot in the summer. However, I have a heater on in my room in the winter and an air conditioner on during the summer, so it usually stays about 72 in my room.

The 55 gal tank has a built in UTH. What else do I need/ should I get? I have a temp gun for my beardie, so that covers thermometers, and I have one hiding spot that I am not using any more or my tarantula, so that gives me one hiding spot. I figure an empty tissue box for a second large hide-out and 3 or 4 empty toilet paper rolls for while my corn is still a baby.

Should I get a thermostat for the UTH? I have never seen one of these before, and never heard of it until looking up the care of corn snakes, but im sure my local pet store should have it.

Besides that thermostat, (which im not sure if i need) do i need anything else?

Well as I mentioned in the other topic, I believe you're gonna lose a hatchling in a 55 gallon, so I suggest temporarily dividing up the tank untill the snake is older.
Divide it up so that at least 1/3-1/2 half of the "tank" is over the UTH and the rest will be the cold side. Your room temp is good as long as it doesn't get too chilly, if it starts dropping if you turn the heater off you're likely to have issues.
In concerns to the hides makes sure they're snug and tight, you'd be suprised what they try to cram themselves into.
And yes generally we do tend to recommend a thermostat, only because unregulated they can get well over 100 degrees in minutes.
Also, one more thing-waterdish

water dish right! haha that would be silly to forget...

So should I not put down aspen while my corn is a baby? Maybe just paper towels? I really don't want to lose my snake, but I don't want to keep him in a shoebox either... I guess I could divide the cage up... but I don't know with what

You can pick up faunariums or critter keepers for about $15, and they'll last him until he's about 8 months old (but obviously it depends on the initial size of the tank and the growth rate of your Corn). And then, when he's big enough you can just transfer him into the bigger tank.

I'd recommend using paper towels until he's a few months old at least, but I'd always feed outside the tank in a shoebox or another type of box, to prevent ingestion of substrate and the association that; if the tank opens up it's feeding time. Aspen is a great substrate as it allows your Corn to burrow, so it acts as one big hide.

Apart from that, it seems like you're on the right track.

All the best

David
