The Filly I am Training

New Avatar!
This is Candy aka Sugar's Mini Bar, out of Easy Pure pride by Sugar's Oak
Bar who goes back to Sugar Bars and Doc Bar. She is the filly I have been assigned to since this last Fall, and I have been training her in my Colt Training class at CSU. She belongs to Purina Mills Farms (they breed to do research on their feeds). Right now she is walk, trot, cantering relaxed with a soft mouth. We are working on more forward motion into our turns when steering, and riding over poles. She is starting to learn turn on the haunches too.

I have trained her from the ground up. I was the first person to saddle her and the first person to ever ride her. She will be sold in April at the Legends of Ranching sale.

Yes,s he is TINY! remember, Sugars "Mini" Bar:

Oh, and sorry about the sideways picture..thought photobucket had actually saved what I had done..obviously not. Oh, and sorry about my grunginess....I never dress like a normal person for colt training class, since I get so dirty lol.

What a beautiful filly! I'm sure it will be hard when she is sold.

Will you be getting another one to train after this one is sold?
Thanks for sharing her with us.

I am in the process of finding a horse to buy, and actually have the option to bid for her in the sale if I want. However, I will probably try to find a more broke horse as she will still need a lot of work to finish her. I will be sad when she is gone but I will be buying my own horse soon anyways....she has been a great horse to learn to train on, since she is pretty quiet and learns well.

Wow, you weren't kidding when you said she was small! She is adorable though. I don't think you look dirty, I was actually thinking you looked pretty clean for working with the horsies!

you stayed one heck of a lot cleaner than I did when I was working with horses! LOL

she is small, but a very beautiful bay with a nice strip :) For being green she sure seems to want to be a pleaser, so that should help anyone who gets her :) If they treat her nice and save her soft mouth :)

Good luck with her, I wouldn't be able to see a horse like that being sold after all of the hard work I put into it.

Yeah, I'd keep her if she wasn't so tiny! I feel like if I bought her I'd have to loose some weight lol. But also she has some habits that I can't seem to break that annoy me. We shall see, I could always surprise myself :)

She looks much tinier in the pictures than she is..she is VERY stout. She is 960 lbs of muscle! She is 3 actually. And to be honest, for a little horse she sure is strong lol.

Oh well. Good luck with finding another one though!

I like small horses actually. My arab was only a little over 14.2 hands and quite strong. He couldn't carry a very heavy person, but he was more than able to handle myself or some of my friends and my husband. He's still going strong and sound at 28 years old, but he was never backed until he was 3 years old. Many of the western horses, especially quarter horses are backed at 2 and are crippled by 6. It's a shame that people are in such a hurry to compete that they damage the horse. It's great that you waited until 3, especially with such a small animal.

Yeah, well, she is in training I'd say on average 4 days a week to five at the most (and one of those days I usually do showmanship training with her on the ground). But we also have this great equissage pad that massages their backs so that they don't get so sore. Candy loves that pad. I used it last week after a semester and a half of training....her back was slightly sore. I don't think that we are working them too hard, and to be honest, I could probably do harder (but I am lazy too lol). It is true that many people are in a rush and that is why great horses get ruined so young..very sad!

She's beautiful! Starting Coconuts was such a blast and if all goes well with her foal I'll be helping with that in 3 years time! Nuts still has never had a bit in her mouth because we just used the Parelli rope halters with her and she neck reins! Going against the usual (in this country) methods has been so nice. We were watching a Ray Hunt dvd on starting colts last night and like his gentle manner too :)
