The Prodigal Snake!

About 4 weeks ago, my roommate left the lid off of my new ghost corn's snake while feeding her and she escaped. We searched high and low and couldn't find my 3 and a half foot snake anywhere. I was absolutely heartbroken because I live in a tiny room without many places to hide and had she have escaped into the hall of my residence, she would have in all likelihood have disappeared forever.

A few days ago, my roommate went home to study for exams and bring back some of her things before moving out and heard her mother screaming. Curled up inside a roller skate in a cardboard box full of other things was Monica.

I'm positive that she hasn't had anything to eat or drink in weeks. She's was in the middle of a shed that obviously was going badly and my once sassy, fat, shiny snake was bone thin, and light as paper. I stuck her into a tub of water and she didn't stop drinking for a good hour and kept coming back to soak. She shed off most of her old skin, except I believe she has an infection on her tail. She's way too skinny at this point to eat the hoppers that she had before so I gave her a day to finish shedding, settle in and get rehydrate before I tried feeding her.

When I did she devoured two fuzzies and has been cruising around her tank just like she used to. I think all the drinking did her good because she's looking noticeably less skeletal than she did before and seems to be heavier.

I'm not sure what's up with her tail though and I'm kind of worried about it. It hadn't shed off and there was a lot of brown crust around it and there's about an inch and a half section that she has no mobility in, it's rock hard and straight. I soaked it with water and a bit of oil for a while and it slid right off, but the brown (poo?) is cemented on there. Even more upsetting, is the fact that it seems to be hacked away deeply in a few spots. I'm not sure if it's from her trying to bend her tail which almost seems decayed to the bone there, or if she tried to eat it or...I've got no solid ideas.

I don't know of any herp vets around here and I don't have much money to throw around (or readily available transport) right now, so what I'm going to do is bring her over to the place where I bought here and show her to the lady in charge of the snakes who is very knowledgable and see what she thinks. If she agrees that it's bad or needs amputating, I'll take her on off to the vet.

But, I'm quiiiiite happy she's back. =) Hurrah Monica!

Sounds like a shed go wrong or she may have got it caught in something that damaged it. I'm glad to hear that she's home safe and sound. She can still be healthy and beautiful, even if she loses a bit of tail.

Turns out that her tail, a small patch on her side and a strip down her spine were burned on the radiator. Of these, only the tail is badly damaged.

I'll be bringing her into see somebody about it tomorrow or the day after.
