Theos new forever home

After extensive searching we have finally purchased Theos forever home (stunning 4ft oak viv) Theo is only 11 months and 40g .When the viv arrived the supplier advised he is possibly still a bit small and to leave him in his little viv (see my pics) for the time being which is no problem. His tiny viv has on the base two glass layers to slip a heat may between which I stupidly assumed all vivs had!!! So I asked supplier where the heat mat should go ?? He advised putting on base or using a lamp 😈 I'm confused now!!!! I swear by this site and from the little knowledge I have corns do not need lamps they need under belly heat .....right????? Also would it not be dangerous for Theo to be in direct contact (we use aspen bedding but he does burrow) with the mat ??? Ie not glass layer between??? Thankfully we still have some time to sus everything out as he still so small supplier suggested he may get through vents lol so no forever home for Theo as yet ! Any advice greatly appreciated other than my OTT concerns Theo doing great ,eating well gaining weight and finally shedding regularly clever little snake xxx
 
I remember seing somewhere here or another corn snake forum about a heat mat protector. It's basically a kind of case in which you place the mat that then has another layer above with some space in between and acts as the double layers or the undertank gaps of other vivariums. I don't know if it's the best option but you can take a look.
I have also seen other people carving a hole for the mat in the wood and then covering it with a mesh layer for the same result.
 
Heat pad protector sounds good 😉 I will need to search the web our pet shop here in Scotland is very limited and their knowledge is pretty grim !!! I love above link ,what a fantastic transformation but I would be too worried using tape of any kind ??? I'm tempted to just get 2 sheets of glass made by a glazier and a joined to fit them .I'm a bit miffed this an issue tbh hoped viv would be ready to go ,I don't want to use a lamp grrrrr!!!
 
You can try with some very thin natural rubber chair-leg ends (IDK how you call this in english, I mean the rubber piece used under chair and table legs to protect the floors from scratching) and putting a piece of glass or methacrylate, something heat-proof and make your own protector?

You could try caulking it around the edges instead of using tape maybe? Just tossing out ideas, I've never had a wooden viv. :shrugs:
