Thermometer help

So I have the viv all set up for my buddy, but the thermometer is reading 95degrees on the warm side... The UTH is wrapped in aluminum foil, not even pressed up against the glass and there's a good amount of substrate in the tank above it...

How do I regulate this, or do you think the thermometer may be waaayy off?? It's steadily climbing, too...

Also- Am I needing a ThermoSTAT instead of, or in addition to, my thermometer?? If so, I am severely confused on a how a thermostat would regulate the temperature of the UTH- If someone could explain this to me and clear my confusion, I would be so very grateful lol

I was told (still new to corns/snakes) that you always need a thermothermoSTAT to regulate the uth. You plug the uth into the thermostat and then the thermostat into the wall. put the probe of the thermostat in the viv directly in the center of the uth. You set the thermostat at the proper temp and the probe reads the uth temp and regulates it so it isn't to hot. The thermometer is to double check that it is all working properly. The uth get to hot and need to be regulated so they don't burn your baby. Where is the probe for the thermometer? And I hope that helps some :)

Nevermind the last question, I see in the photo it's under your aspen and I will assume over your uth. Idk at which point they can get burned but if they burrow, which both of mine do, I'm assuming with those temps it could be a possibility?

Omg thank you!
With your help and some googling, I was able to understand better lol I was SO.CONFUSED.
I put two pieces of cardboard between the UTH and the tank, but the temp isn't going lower than 92degrees- So I will go tomorrow and purchase a ThermoSTAT, as I'd much rather set it and not have to worry about him burning.

So with the thermostat, you plug the UTH into THAT, then plug the thermostat in the wall, and you can regulate the temperature yourself, correct? I can set it at, say, 85degrees, and it will stay there??

Yep. The thermostat has it's own probe attached that tells it what the temp is of the uth. The probe tells the thermostat so it can regulate it's temp. But the uth gets plugged into the thermostat so the thermostat can regulate it. Then use your thermometer and put it's probe next to the other probe to double check it's reading the right temp.

Perfectly said.

And you want to set the thermostat temp to 87°, that is a good setting that will make the top of the warm side about 85° and the cool end 75°. Don't worry about the cool end, if the warm side is in the mid-80s range the snake will find a happy medium in the tank. This is also why it is important to have a hide at each end and some in the middle if you can. For little guys smooshed toilet paper tubes partially buried are great, free hides!

Woohoo! Yes, thank you! I was not happy watching that temperature rise, I was like what am I doing wrong?!
Now that I understand, I can take care of the problems lol this site is so great, so many knowledgeable people with extremely helpful ideas.

I'm headed to Orlando after I write this message to go meet little dude!
I'll post photos when I get home tomorrow!

Aaawww thank you, everyone here is so sweet and helpful.
