Pet Corn Snake

Hey, I have used stick on thermometers for 2 years now, I was just wonder how accurate they actually are.. I mean, I have one thermostat that run's two corn snake tanks, both tanks read 80F on there stick on thermometer, if the temp goes up, both thermometers go up, same if the temp goes down.

I was just wondering, if they are made for reptile tanks, and placed ontop of the substrate "not on the side of the tank" then why are people so quick to insult them? People who created accessories for reptiles, must have some knowledge in reptiles..

I'm actually going to get a digital thermometer soon, but I'm worried that I'll have to go round about 20 times a day checking all the tanks are the right temps, or buy 5 £15 thermometers which with my financial status right now is impossible.

I use one of the small round ones on my cool side. It's not that accurate, about 5 degrees or more different than the digital probe. I know that and I just use it for a quick look at ambient temperature, when it's not covered up.
I wouldn't really use it for a critical temp.

Thank you Alan, you use digital yeah? Do you have to check the temps like 2 times a day? With the digital? Or do you check them all once? I could not afford 5 digital thermometers so I would have to use one and go round all the tanks with it..

I have a Zilla probe therm/hygrometer. I look at it every so often, but with everything "dialed in" it doesn't change much. My thermostat keeps it in about a 4 degree range high to low.

Hey George

It's more about the science behind the thermometers. Yes, they were created for use with reptiles, but I think they were designed with measuring the ambient temperature in mind, and also they're a cheap alternative to digital thermometers. Analogue equipment is always less accurate than its digital counterparts. I don't think it's about insulting them, it's just that the truth is; they are less accurate than digital ones.

I use a digital thermometer with a probe, and I got it from Maplins for about £15. I have three tanks, but I don't check the temps every day, I check them every other day and at feeding times. They're usually pretty consistent, and if you've fixed your thermostat probes well, and you fiddled with your thermostats, the temps don't require constant checking.

All the best

David
