So i went out and bought myself a shiny digital thermometer. I can stick the probe where I want it and get a good reading of the temperature gradient.

Only thing is, there isn't really one. With the heat lamp on the temperature at the bottom front is slightly higher, but 86d. Lamp off and only running with my space heater at low temp, it's 80d at front, 78d at the back. I can't really seem to get a good gradient because of the cage I bought. It's taller bottom to top than it is wide across the bottom.

Any ideas as to what I can do, at least until I get Jasper a small-ish UTH? I'm trying putting cool water near the glass on one side of the tank. Not touching, but a few cm away.

UTH,,for a small tank or tub the over head heat isn't the best way to go.It will heat the whole tank.
UTH WILL only heat the bottom area of the tank.Your house will keep the cool side where it should be.Make sure to check your light source for heat.
Florescence seem to throw less heat than other bulbs, making them a better choice.Hope this helps.

Waiting for my UTH to come in. Pet store didn't have small enough and the kit only came with one that fits on top.

Pet Store worker man sold me a 100w red-glo bulb, which I thought was a little much (still do). Heats the tank real good, to 86F on the top of the substrate below where the heater is placed. But since the bottom of the viv isn't that large, there isn't much of a difference towards the back of the tank, where the heat isn't radiating towards.

If it stays at 78-80 without the heat I think I would leave the light off until you get your heating pad.
Is there some way you can angle the lamp towards one corner?

Nope. And it looks like the bulb I was sold warped the plastic that held the light socket. I think I'm just gonna keep my room around 80-ish until that pad comes in.
