Thermostat and thermometers

Need more Corns
I need to buy both of these for my snake and dont have a clue were to start lol. I have seen this thermostat and thermometer and need to know if it is suitable.

If not, can anybody recommend some that are good but not overly expensive as i am a bit short of money at the moment. I will need them to be in the UK.

Thanks

You're in the UK so I can't help too much.

The thermometer looks fine, but I think if you used the suction cup it might rest too high above the viv surface. I usually just silicone my probes down directly on the surface.

As far as the thermostat I have no idea. I've never heard of that one so I can't help too much. Does it have a probe?

Yea it says on the site it comes with a sensor, so i would presume this means the probe

Haven't used the Microclimate but it looks to have everything I'd expect to see on a stat and the spec says it's designed for use with heatmats. Can't see any issue with it. I use a differerent make, but mine are all straight on/off stats like the Microclimate and they work just fine.

Hi bitsy

Thanks for that. I have read up on the microclimate and they seem to have very good reviews. I have read that the dimmer thermostat is better than the on/off type due to the dimmer being able to stay on a keeping the temperature constant and doesn't have to turn off and on to cool down/heat up. Any idea whats best for a corn

They'll both work for your corn.
By "dimmer" do you mean a rheostat, or is it a proportional thermostat?
A proportional thermostat regulates the heater more precisely than the "on-off" kind, it should stay pretty close to the set temp.
An on-off type has to heat up the heater and then it turns off at the set temp but still raises a little in temp, it cools and and then turns back on. This gives you a wider range of temperature.
A rheostat can keep it constant but if the room temp changes you must change the setting yourself to compensate..
My on-off thermostat is mechanical and I just checked today's temps, the range is 4.5°F, I'm good with that.

TBH, Corns aren't that fussy. The on/off types only give a few degrees difference. I've never used a dimmer type, but as I've never had a problem I've never felt the need to try them. My oldest Corn is 21 and the next one down is 17, so I can't think that's it's a major issue for them.

Well i cant argue with that lol. So the on/off type will rise to the temp you have set then go off and come back on when it has cooled right down again?

I have used microclimate mat stat, but i prefer habistat, habistats have a knob dial where as the one your looking at needs a coin for something flat headed to adjust the temps if you need to. They are more expensive but I love them especially the pulse perportaionate one

I have the Habistats with both dial and flat-headed adjusters. I've found that I've occasionally knocked the dials and changed the settings, which is impossible to do with the flat-headed adjuster. Slightly more of a fiddle to get it set in the first place, but not a bad thing really.

I use both Habistat and Microclimate thermostats, both makes work very well :)

This thermometer.... Exo-Terra digital thermometer .... I've found is reliable and reasonably priced, it also has the max/min function so you can check how high/low the temps have been since you last checked :)

With the thermometer, do you put the sensor on the side/bottom of the cage or do you let it hang in the air, in the part you want to measure the temp

Put the probe on the bottom of the viv, on the glass. Substrate temp is what matters on the warm side (for belly heat).

For a corn snake you want to be measuring inside the warm side hide, as this is where the corn will go for warmth. If using a heat mat to heat the warm side, then you need to place the probe under the warm hide, under the substrate, on top of the heat mat. If using a ceramic or bulb type heat source, which heats from above, then you need to place the probe of the thermometer in the warm hide on top of the substrate.

To get the temperature set right, I place the probe from the thermometer right alongside the probe from the thermostat, then when the thermometer reads the temp I'm aiming for, I gently tweak the thermostat off, let it run for a couple of on/off cycles, just to make sure it stays in the temp range you're aiming for. If it doesn't then tweak it a little higher or lower, depending on whether it's running too hot or too cool.

I hope that helps some :)
