thermostat/ thermometer

Well I purchased a thermostat on ebay as it said it could be used for reptiles but now I have it I think it's wrong :shrugs: it has little plastic proby thing but says you have to put it at least 30cm away from the heat source!
It's realy meant for an aquarium....

also, is it possible to buy a thermostat with a themometer or do you have to buy them separately??

I thought I only had to get a heatmat, and thermostat didn't realise I had to buy a separate thermometer which is why I ask is there an all in one device I can get??

Not sure if you can get an all in one but i brought them seperately which was good because i brought a dual screen one so i can see the inside temp and outside temp at the same time so i can monitor them easily:D

One of the best places to get stuff like this is from www.beanfarm.com. They have quite a bit of stuff specifically for reptiles.

however, you will need to put the prob close to the heater anyway. This way you will get the proper reading.

The instructions say to put the probe at a distance from the heater because they are presuming that you will be heating a volume of water and would not want a warm spot. For aquariums and waterbeds, this ensures that the heat is distributed throughout the water. There will be no danger to the equipment if you put it right over the heat mat, however. It will work just like any thermostat.

My esu reptile thermostat also said to put the probe on the glass out of range of the direct radience of the heat source. I was skeptical but tried it out and it keeps the temp on the surface where you set it.
As for combined thermostat/thermometer I think you would have to go to something like the helix thermostats which run between 100 and 250US

and what is the best temperature to set the thermo at?

If I turn it to 25 degrees it just switches off because the ambient temperature is obviously higher. I have to set it at 29 degrees C plus to get it to stay on - is that OK?

29 (84F) should be fine for the temperature, as long as you are measuring below the substrate. If that is the temp on the top, it is likely much hotter below. As others have said, some thermostats will act as a thermometer. Helix proportionals are one such example, but I don't know much about others.

Oh yes I'm going to get a thermometre as well, I only bought and plugged in the heat mat yesterday, also the tank has little feet so is raised above the heat mat a bit, so it's not very hot inside, barely luke warm but I realise that is just to me, I need to get a thermometre so I can see how the thermostat is working.

Snake should be ready end of next week or the week after :) they've fed twice he wants to get them another feed in before he lets them go which is fair enough.
