Thermostat

There are plans to build a rheostat for $7 in either the Misc Corn Discussion forum or the General Chit Chat forum (it's pretty easy from what I've heard, although I never tried it because I use other ways to regulate heat).

As far as an actual thermostat like something you have on your wall for your home furnace goes, I don't think anybody actually uses that because you'd need to somehow have a probe on it to read the temps...and it'd be expensive.

Thermostats...

there is one from Helix that you can get at www.beanfarm.com . Althought it is pretty expensive. I know that Big Apple Herps has one too that they offer. so does Zoo Med, and a few others.

I personally use the Helix and love it. All of these come with a Probe that you place in the area to be heated.

Besides the build it yourself reostat, there was a post that at Wal-mart you can buy a dimmer switch for a lamp. It plugs into the wall and there is a slider or knob used to adjust. i think it was $9.

come to think of it, how exactly does a thermostat work with a UTH? I can see using it with a basking light because it cools down fast, but UTHs stay pretty warm even after they're turned off don't they? It just seems like there'd be a huge lag time with the UTH responding.

does the DBS 1000 come ready to go out of the box or would I need to attach wires?

It comes ready to go. Plug it in the wall and plug in the heating elements you want it to control and Viola! Just got mine a week or so ago and it is working flawlessly so far. :)

Thanx for the response!

You place the probe of the Thermostat in the area around the UTH where the snake will be at. When that area reaches the temp the thermostat is set at, the power to the UTH will be turned off. As long as the probe is reading the set temp, then the UTh will remain in the off position. As soon as the temp drops below a certain minimum, the power to the UTH is restored until the temp is reached again.

This works just like the thermostat that is set for your Central Air and Heat systems.
