Thermostat

I have the older style BAH-1000 and used it with success. However, since it is an on/off type thermostat versus a proportional one, with the older model I was getting a temperature fluctuation of as much as +/- 3 degrees Fahrenheit. Perhaps with the new model they tightened it down a bit.

But wait there’s more…for an additional $70 (I’m not sure of your budget) you can upgrade to a Spyder Robotics Herpstat digitally proportional thermostat:

I recently put the thermometer smack on the floor of Ziggy's tank right above his heating pad. With the heating lamp on (60W) and the UTH on (8W) it is reading a steady 86-87 degrees. :)

believe me, I can barely tell it's on, even when I put my hand to the glass.

If you say so, I have four ZooMed pads on my 10 gals and they don't necessarily get hot, but the glass sure does. I have a thermostat.. three of them actually, and the dual one was acting up. It was continually reaching 95 on the glass. My glass got too hot to touch with my bare hand. The other tank, Kieran had dislodged the probe and it wasn't over the pad anymore and when I did a spot check (after realizing the other one was having issues) and almost burnt my hand.

But you are there and we are not. So if you say it's barely hot, my guess is that the thing is not working correctly.

Well after some minor tweaks yesterday my thermometer is reading a steady 87 degrees for about 24 hours now...so I think its all good.

If it soothes your mind to believe it, go for it. I know with my thermostats that they are constantly adjusting the amount of power going into the UTHs to keep the temps steady. Of course, I know there are those that don't believe you need anything at all as long as your house temps are decent, but please keep a eye and a hand on the glass itself and not the UTH.
