thermostat

Might I suggest you call Petco? I know my petco doesnt, but different stores in different areas may carry different products :)

Good Luck!

Some may but you are better off going to a small mom and pop style shop that caters to reptile owners if you can.

They used to carry the ZooMed 500R for $39.99 but my local Petco at least discontinued them last year. I picked up their last 2 for $4.99 each.

You can find them online for around $20 plus shipping. Try reptiledirect.com or reptilesupply.com

I picked up a Zoomed rheostat from Petsmart for $20. Works great w/ lamps OR heat mats. I'm using it w/ a small UTH on my 10 gal. Under Tank Heaters will get VERY hot if not used in conjunction w/ a thermostat or rheostat. The control knob on mine is set at nearly the lowest setting and the glass on the tank gets up to 85-90 degrees. They recommend using terrarium carpeting if you use loose substrate that your snake can bury themselves in. Although, if the temperature is closely monitored, no problems should arise, and you should have yourself a happy lil' snake w/ a warm belly! =)

Name brands of thermostats

Sorry to piggy back on this thread but it pertains to the question I have.....

What are some exact brand names of thermostats that I can google to find the best price? I have a 20L with aspen substrate. I use a incandescent light for heat during the day and a black light at night. But I plan on buying an UTH and some carpeting for under the substrate...I dont want to burn my snake so I know I need to get something that regulates the temperature in case I dont notice it getting too hot/cold. I have only had my snake for about a week but I have tried to do A LOT of research before hand. On expert told me no UTH at all and one breeder told me yes so I didnt intially buy one. I think I need one now because we turned the AC on in my house the other night and the tank temp won't budge from 80 degrees on the warm side and Im afraid its not warm enough for MoJo to help him digest(Normal het for Hypo Male-9 months old) It was at 85 before the AC turned on in the house (but it was unbearable in my house) We did close the vent to the room and put a heavy box over the vent to block any cold air from getting through but it doesnt seem to have helped. He constantly stays on the warm side of the tank. He is still very shy and hasnt explored his viv yet. Sorry for the yapping but I just wanted to give all details...

Can someone tell me exactly what thermostat I need so I dont have to keep constantly worry about checking the temp in the cage 10 times a day? Im a worry wart. Is there something with an alarm or light that blinks?

Oh, and do I need a UTH AND a heat light? Wont that make it too hot in there? IDK Thank you for any help you can give me.

Check my post above, ZooMed 500R works well for corn snakes and is quite cheap online.

reptilesupply.com seems to be cheapest currently, $21.99 plus shipping. Occasionally it will be on sale for 19.99 or 20.99

UTH & Heat Lamp to be regulated with Zoo Med 500R??

So can I use a heat lamp AND a UTH? Will the Zoo Med 500R Regulate both? Im sorry for so many questions but this is a fuzzy area for me. I have had multiple people give me all different answers so Im a little confused. The websites Ive read aren't any more consistent.

Yes, it could run both, but you don't really need the lamp at all. And if you put it on a thermostat it will be blinking on and off at odd intervals all the time.

Non-heating Lights?

Is there some sort of light that I can use to just provide the day/night cycles for him without heat? The room (our 4th bedroom) we have him in doesnt really get that much sunlight through out the day. And at night I know they areally dont NEED light but it is really cool to be able to see him (if he ever comes out of his hide).

You don't need a heat lamp and a UTH, only one or the other. And the Zoo Med could regulate either, but not both at the same time.

What I would do is to ditch the heat lamp and get a UTH and the Zoomed 500R thermostat. If you want lights, get a regular fluorescent fixture that doesn't generate much heat and put that on a timer for day/night cycles.

Yep, sorry, it's one of those situations where you'll probably get as many different answers as there are keepers.

I'm sure plenty of folks use various combos of heating/lighting very successfully. I think Matthew has suggested the setup I'd go for, if I was looking for heat plus a viewing light.
