thermostats

Sorry but it usually come down to what you can afford. But keeping your snake safe and warm comes first, Sooo ....

The more $$$$ is usually better.

Just my thoughts :)

I've never used a thermostat for my UTH's. I just mount them on a piece of glass and then put them underneath. It's never been a problem. I did order a thermostat for my Green Tree Python. A Spyder Herpstat proportional thermostat for $108. from MG Reptiles.

I got something similar to the first one and when I have it at the lowest setting possible and it is still at 98 normally. Better than the 119 it used to be! :realhot:

This is just my opinion remember; The first thermostat will work for you just fine. However you need to get it at least a few days before your snake to set the temp. correctly. Those thermos work just fine but do take some time to adjust.
As jnky stated an indoor/outdoor thermometer is a good idea to be safe and yes they are avail at walmart for $10. a minimal extra expense, But better than a cooked snake.

Psssdjay, 98 (belly heat) is too hot for nagini. 86-7 would be bordering on too hot. Try and get 82ish on the warm side 76ish on the cooler side. Try only using part of the mat or something, slide it back so you can't see the unused part, thats what I did before I got my stat. I had to as my mat was double the size needed for my starter tank.
Just curious what temp is your cooler side?

OOPS!! Ment to say 88 burried probe temp! My bad... cooler side is 68-70, it varies, but i find her all over, I hope it isnt too cool. I plan to add more news paper under the aspen on sunday when i clean out her tank. My mat is about the size of 2/3 of 2 playing cards next to each other. Mine is stick on so I cant move it now. Still all temp untill I finish her big tank, still building stand.

Ahh OK gotcha. I'm kinda wondering how you get a range of 18 degrees though. I suppose it could be that 'astro turf' you use doesn't hold heat well, and/or a well ventilated lid. It's just that I struggle to get more than a 6 degree difference I suppose. If snakeys happy and no regurges etc, then there should be no problems IMO.

I actually stopped using the turf when I switched to aspen. I put newspaper first then the aspen on top. The turf actaully kept the temp down to 85 with out a thermostat but with just newspaper and aspen it went up to 110 so I had to get one.

It really boils down to what your plans for the themrostat are. If you just want something that will take a beating and work pretty much forever then a Johnson Controls or a Ranco will be fine. These are also good if your controlling large numbers of the same type of heatng element.. Looking for more control, bells and whistles and a night drop, then a herpstat is what you need.. DONT USE A CHEAP TSTAT... They WILL fail, its just a matter of when.. Check out this link
