Thermostats??

I have read about thermostats and how great they are to have in tanks. I went to Home Depot and they had no idea how to hook them up or hook them up to a heat lamp. So I'll ask the genius's here! How exactly do I get a thermostat to control my heat lamp?? Any suggestions would be great!! :)

Electronics Student here..

Okay your not going to want to use a home thermostat to control a light for your snakes cage and I'll explain why. For starters the thermostats temp sensor is in the box so if the box isn't in the tank its not measuring the appropriate temp. So you would need to put the thing in your tank and you would put your snake in danger of electic shock, since there not ment to be pooped on. LOL Second the sensor would be measuring the air temp instead of the surface temp which is a big difference. Your air temp can be much lower then your surface temp and your snake spends his/her time on the ground. Thirdly the home thermostat can't turn a light or heat pad ect.. on/off alone. A home thermostat controls relays built into heaters, fans, air conditioners ect.. . You could go out and buy a 120VAC relay and control it with the thermostat but I don't think its a good idea. Instead I think you should research the helix systems. These little box's allow you to place a remote temp sensor wherever you want and control different things based on the product you buy. There made for these applications and are ready to go. Plus there are different featers to chose from. The site is :
Helix Controls

If you did buy a thermostat from home depot you can always take it back... there like Walmat that way. But if you so wish, I could post a picture of a schematic on how to wire up a thermostat but I highlly recommend against it for the saftey of your snake and you.

Oh and check out www.howstuffworks.com they have a great explination of how a thermostat works.

Hope that helps

Good luck
