This vid shocked me that I had to post it...

Just to make this clear, this is not my snake, I do not know this guy Ive just watched it on youtube and well... pity the boa =(

Its a feeding video of a boa constrictor, with SAND substrate, no hides and I cant see a source of heat, unless theres a heat mat.

And if you watch closely at the end, there is 2 live mice in that tank at the same time, 2. Sometimes... some people...

Video - Warning, Live Feeding

I'm not sure what you think is disgusting about that. There isn't a problem with having the sand...IF you feed outside of the tank. Small amount of reptile sand can be ingested without causing impaction. It also appears as if that snakes knows exactly how to dispatch a live critter without getting hurt.

The only problem I see is a possible risk to the snake by the second mouse. The constricting itself isn't bad at all.

The first part was hamsters, then they suddenly became two white mice. Although I don't advocate sand as substrate, I'd hardly call this the most disgusting thing I'd ever seen.

The only thing I see a problem with is feeding on sand. as mentioned, small ammounts of sand being ingested won't cause impaction, but it is still a risk I wouldn't take. There is a risk with feeding live too, but if you supervise, problems can be prevented.

And I suppose your snakes eat tofu?
Even if you are feeding f/t, they still were alive at one time, and they died so that your snake could eat. Snakes eat animals. Some of us feed them f/t and some feed live, but we all feed them animals. If a snake eating a rodent is the most disgusting thing you've ever seen, maybe a snake isn't the best pet for you.

I think the disturbing part for Razor is the constricting of the live prey and watching the hamster's little feet struggle. Many can't stand to see a critter "suffer" and will imagine what it must be thinking/feeling.

Those of use who don't give a hoot about it aren't the type to personify animals and give them human emotions.

I agree. I think that would be the part that would bother people. Yet there are others that think it is cool.

Im more disgusted at how he keeps a boa in a tank without hides, sand as a substrate and feeds it multiple live rodents. To me that is poor care, others may have different views but I dont like it myself :eek1:

I think perhaps the idea being skipped here is the fact that people who feed their boa two live rodents at the same time on a sand substrate and video tape it to post online are PROBABLY posting it only for the amusement of themselves and others.

My snake eats (or WILL eat) F/T rodents. They were once alive and are dead now because my snake has to eat. There may come a time when I have to feed my snake a live pinky, or I have a snake that just will NOT eat F/T prey. In that case, I will be feeding the snake a living creature, which will die so that my snake can live. I eat a steak for dinner, which means that a cow died so that I can live. This is Nature- this is okay.

Keeping a snake so that you can amuse yourself and friends by watching (and filming) the death of another animal in a situation that may be dangerous to the snake is not okay. I have no respect for individuals who keep predatory animals just to watch them dispatch and consume their prey, especially if that is their sole reason for keeping said animal. To me these people are sick and disturbed and really shouldn't own any animal, because it's just an object to them.

I think perhaps that is what Razor may have meant, and I hope I did an okay job of explaining my perspective.

I agree with Hypancistrus all the way. This seems to be the sad part of it here! Getting amused from a feeding.

When I first got a corn snake, I enjoyed watching it subdue and eat prey. I was a fourteen year old boy, but I don't think I was sick or disturbed. It was interesting. Of course, it got old fast.

True, but you also didn't film it and put it online. I was speaking only of my experiences with people who would film an event and place it on You Tube or any other site like that. I didn't mean to generalize about all people who are interested in how snakes feed.

Who knows maybe there just proud. I know any time i have freinds over on feeding day i make it a point to show them my snakes killing and eating prey. I happen to find it facinating that an animal with no limbs found such an effective way to kill prey. Its just one of the many things i find so amazing abiut snakes. I personally derive great pride and joy from watching my snakes kill a mouse. But everyones different i guess.

just a few points.. Mabey he took the Hides and the water out WHILE feeding so it wouldnt get sand in the water and get wrapped around the hides? or so the prey COULDNT hide..

and also.. that was a Guinny Pig (SP)

ANd while i do have pet rodents... it doesnt bug me none the least to feed them live.. Snakes are my favorite animal if it wont take F/T i will NOT hesitate to give it live.. or Prekilled.

not to sound rude.. but i do NOT think Rodents have the same emotion levels as us.. There life is it avoid being eatin.. eat.. reproduce.. they do that untill they get eaten.. its life.. in the wild it would happen the same way..

just my .02

since i cant edit.. I should have said..

as i do NOT agree with feedng live IF they will take pre killed..
but.. a snakes life is priority over any rodent if its the last means of feeding it
