Thought she was a butter, but NOT! Any thoughts?

Ok. Long story short. We bought this "Butter" female 2 years ago. Turns out, she isn't a butter at all. She was solid yellow when we bought her. She was a yearling at the time. This past year, she started to develop the red/orange borders around her sadles. This came out of nowhere. Thinking she was just a wierd butter, we paired her with our young male butter.

The babies are not butters, obviously. I consulted with a couple of the most respected breeders here first. And they agreed. It's not a butter. Maybe a hybrid. Maybe not. But none had seen anything like her. Not exactly. So I am asking if anyone here, has seen this happen? And if so, what do you think is going on? A creamsicle maybe? (I hope not). But either way, I'll be watching the babies and may hold back a couple just to play around with.

One of the hatchlings after 2 sheds: I really need to take more of the other hatchlings. They don't all look alike. This one has very wide borders.

I went and played around with the colors because I could tell the picture was really over-exposed, so I'm going to repost those pictures to give a better idea.

The pattern and coloring is really really weird. I've never seen side saddles in corns that big before. Perhaps a grey rat cross?

Well, I agree, she defintely doesn't look butter but she sure is a VERY pretty girl. Actually, she has the same type of look to her that my Frosted Snow has in pattern type. The darker pattern outline and light saddle. I am not saying she is definitely a hybrid but if I were to take a "wild" guess, I would think Gray Rat/Corn cross. Possibly even Gray Rat/Corn/Emory too. But whatever she is, she is a looker for sure! :)

The male looks like a nice butter. Well, at least you know your babies are het for butter.

I'll put a picture of my Frosted Snow on to show you what I mean by the "outline" look.

Heh, look!

Same 'heart' head pattern. Is that a common head pattern with the frosteds, Dianne?

Yea, your right. They do both have that heart pattern on the head. That's cool. Good call, Joejr14

Thanks for the help. For sure.

I wanted to ask about the changes you made to my photos however. Only because I wanted to clearify anything someone might see coming into this. Your changes to my photos, (at least on my monitor), look nothing like my snake. The photos I posted, (at least on my monitor), look exactly like my snake. Maybe a little over exposed, but pretty close.
The paper she is on, is brown dimple paper. Disposable craft style paper. So that should act as a color reference. I point this out, because your changes made the paper blue. And in turn also made her look very dark and blue. When in fact, she is as bright of yellow/orange as fresh squeezed orange juice.
I get the same results in Photoshop when I use "auto levels" on my original photo. But Photoshop gets it wrong in this case. Just wanted to ask, so I could see what your changes were showing. Is it to sharpen the patterns? I appreciate the time you took to make the corrections. I felt I should comment though, since I have the actual snake here to compair it to.

I think, tomorrow, I will photograph her and some babies in the sunshine.

Thanks,
Troy

I would say that she definitely resembles a corn x grey rat snake. Here are a couple of pictures of one of mine:

LOL Hey I'm under 30 and I remember those :)

Troy, that is a very awesome looking girl! From the head and saddle pattern, I would go ahead and say a cross too. I'm not as skilled at pin pointing what kind of cross as the others are though. Very unique looking pattern and color. Would be great if she could pass those borders on while still keeping the yellow saddle/ground color intact.

Gee, Joe acting all superior and condescending again. You really should stop assuming you know how everything is SUPPOSED to be and get over yourself.

Sorry for interrupting, just getting sick of constantly coming across this attitude and no one ever says anything (and if someone does, other's defend it).

Ok Honey... I'm getting about sick of you feeling the need to make a comment about this ALL THE TIME. I don't know what crawled up your a** and died, but you have sabotoged yet another post by this stupid hissy fit of yours. Pics have a tendency to come out overexposed and skew the colors up. Joe changed the colors on them just to see if they may have been muted or screwed up by the camera. Sometimes, doing things like that helps so that way everyone has a better understanding (especially when it comes to pics) and can give better advice or possible answers to questions.

I don't know how you think negative comments like that EVERY TIME SOMEONE POSTS going to help this forum, and frankly I don't care what your reasons are anymore. You are rude, insluting, and frankly, I'm sick of having to comment every time you do.

If you have a problem with a post DON'T READ IT. If you have a problem with Joe, then put him on "ignore" so you don't have to look at his posts! DO SOMETHING because I am sick and tired of reading about this, and I'm sure others are as well.

ENOUGH!!! You are 35.... GROW UP

See what I mean about the defending? He was clearly wrong on this, but still defending him. Don't worry, I'm done. And just for the record, all I've done is point something out that I see to be an issue. You're the one that keeps flaming back at me.

Wrong by your standards, right? Oh I forgot that in Duff's world, those ARE the only standards. Funny that you are the only one who thinks that huh.

I wouldn't neccessarily call it flaming... I'd call it adding a little bit of intelligence and common sense to Duffs world of folly.

Thats it... your new nickname is jicin...:D

JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!! :sidestep:

Just trying to make light of a tense situation...

I know we all mean well by the things we say and do but sometimes people just take it wrong...
Just remember If we all thought the same about everything the world would be a very boring place!

It's All good!

I always say...... JUST BREATHE!

OHHHHHH and back to the snake issue....
When I look at that snake it reminds me of my albino black rat snakes...
just something about it...
*attaching a photo*

do you see what I mean? :shrugs:

my snake is just a baby and is not yellow or anything but just something about the saddles kind of catches my eye....
do you think there could be a chance your girl could be albino rat hybrid?

:wavey:

Ok. Some more pics. But not the best...

I took her outside today, thinking I could capture better pics. Well, she was having a great time in the grass. And I was having trouble getting her to set still. LOL.
I was by myself and my new Nikon 5700 is bulky. And I'm still learning how to use it.

Tomorrow, my wife will be off work. I'll have her help me. And maybe we can get better results. Either way. Here are some closeups. Sorry about the blurry head.

Thought a belly shot would be helpful. The ONLY white on her entire body, is from her chin to about 1/4 of her belly. Then it suddenly becomes orange and yellow. No patters at all. Just swirls of color.

On my monitor, these photos are pretty darn close to exact. But there are some shiny spots from the sun that look like white areas. They are not white.

I should have mentioned that my girl is just a yearling. I am sure she will still change colors some as she matures.
