Ticks

I just bought a corn snake on friday of last week. After a couple of days I noticed little black ticks, or fleas, or mights or something imbedded into the scales. How do I get rid of these things, and should I try to take the snake back to the store I bought it from? Thanks for the help.

They are probably mites.

Call the store you got it from~ tell them about the mites and tell them you need some provent-a-mite or reptile relief to treat the condition. (I would expect the store to pay for the treatment~ but you may have trouble convincing them of it. A few well placed comments about telling everyone you know that you get "freebie parasites" with every purchase may entice them to be co-operative~ but try the friendly approach first)

Follow the directions on the treatment you get. Empty out the cage~ clean it and ALL furnishings with bleach water~ rinse well. Use white paper towel substrate (can see the mites easier on white towels) until your sure the mites are all cleaned up (couple weeks).

Good luck!

Thanks. I've been looking around the internet all day to find out how to treat these mites. I'm going to call the petstore today and see what they'll do.

I called the pet store, and they told me to bring in the snake, and they'd spray it with something. I'm going to clean out the cage real good, and go from there. I hope it all works good.

Is it possible for a snake to have fleas? Would fleas imbed themselves in the scales like ticks do? I have a cat, and it might have fleas, and I was wondering if thats where the snake got them. The cat likes to sit next to the cage and watch the snake. I hope that I can clear this all up, this is my first snake and I really like him. I'll post some pictures as soon as I take some.

the fleas from your cat should have no interest in a cold blooded reptile~ IF there are fleas on your snake then there are a LOT of fleas just wondering around~ in which case you have a rather serious flea problem.

I *doubt* they are fleas.

When the pet store treats the snake~ ask them for some of the spray to treat his cage furniture too.

There definetly isn't ALOT of fleas all over the place. I noticed my cat was scratching himself a lot, so I gave him a flea bath, and got him a flea collar. I hadn't actually seen any fleas. I was just trying to figure out if it was possible for my cat to give my snake fleas.... I'm going to the petstore when I get out of work to get my snake sprayed. I'm going to ask them to give me a free bottle of whatever they're spraying him with. I spent 70 bucks for the snake the cage and the heat pad thing, so they better give me a bottle of it.

I took my snake back to the pet shop. Apparently they found out that all of the corns in one aquarium had mites a few days after I bought mine. They credited me with the money I paid for the snake. They are treating all the snakes right now, and in two weeks I can go back and pick out another snake. I doubt I'll be able to get the same snake that I picked out but whatever. As long as I get a healthy snake I'll be happy.
