Save The Humans
Tim, Pictures attached:
I just got a Rubbermaid container. I inserted a hose through the lid that I can plug the CO2 cylinder into. I cut a round hole in the lid about 4” in diameter. I put some wood shavings in the bottom to absorb urine. You can’t see it but I also lined the lid with some foam rubber weather stripping. As I harvest mice, I just drop the ones that are the correct size through the hole in the lid. This size container will hold around 100 adult size mice at a time. When I am ready, I put a coffee can lid over the hole, and turn on the gas very slowly. I turn it up until I can just barley hear the gas running. You don’t want the container to be air tight because you need to let the air out as it is replaced by CO2. I watch until all the mice have quit moving and you can see that nobody is breathing. It takes 5 to 10 minutes. Only seconds for them to die, but 10 minutes to be sure they don’t revive.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.
The mouse pictures are just for fun. They have nothing to do with the topic except that I will be collecting 12 gram hoppers on Saturday.
