Timing for moving to new viv

Hello, all :

We recently adopted a 2-year-old female corn from a neighbor who needed to downsize his reptile collection (30+ snakes, lizards, dragons, etc).

She came to us this week in a 15 gallon tank, which had been her home. I added a UTH (previous owner had been using a heat lamp), probe thermometer (he wasn't using one at all), second hide (she only had one), & Aspen bedding (he'd been using paper towels -- but she seems to love the Aspen & has been busy making burrows).

She's of a decent size and, I think, should be in a 20-long, at least. However:

I don't want to stress her -- & recognize that she's changed households & had some additions to her normal living situ.

How long should I wait before moving her to a larger viv?

Thanks in advance for advice & wisdom!

I assume the "PC" response would be that you have already drastically changed what she was used to, so let her settle in get a few meals in her then move up. To be honest though I don't think it would be a issue to do so now as she is already in a transitional period and a larger enclosure could be swapped in with little added stress.

Well, every case might be a tad different (as you know the temperament, etc. of your snake best; or you will shortly anyway with your new pet). I recently moved our snakes from their original 10gal tanks to 40gal tanks - they are now just shy of a year old, but they were just exceeding the 10gal size (in terms of their length). They have enough hides and such in their new tanks and they took to them with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for the input! PetCo has Zilla Critter cages on sale for 50% off through tomorrow, so I think we'll go ahead & purchase one.

This weekend will also be her first feeding with us -- do you think it would be OK to set up her new viv while she's in her eating bin? I feel like she's cramped in the 15gallon tall.

I felt the same way about a 20L tank. So I picked up a 40 gallon at Petco with the same deal you're talking about for only $60! Definitely a steal.

The 40 gal tank is taller than the 20 gal, but not by a lot. They're perfect for corn snakes, though. I just bought a new one at 50 % from Petco also. It'll be a nice cage that will last the rest of its life. (Although some corns don't get that big, and then a 20 gal will work).

I'm getting ready to move my snake into a new viv also. I fed him 3 days ago, and he'll go in tomorrow. I'm no expert, but I know the move may stress him, so I wanted to give him a chance to digest and not risk a regurge. Now if he gets stressed, he has a full belly and can go a few weeks before feeding.

Would moving the snake to a bigger area be enough to stress the snake? Or is it just the new environment that does it? I know some breeders include some of the bedding the corn snake used to live in when they are shipping animals to help them feel safe. What if you gave the snake almost the exact same setup, with some of the old bedding and same arrangement of hides/decorations? Doesn't seem like it should stress the snake out too much if done right.

However I know this thread was made to ask when to move it, just offering some hints.

Good point -- it will be the same hides, & I can also transfer over most if not all of the Apen bedding she's been using. She seems pretty chill. I was committed to not handling her for at least a week, but today when I was changing her water, she slithered over, flicked her tongue at my hand, & then climbed on to my wrist.

You have a curious one then. They are best kind. My anery does get sassy and nose bump me when she wants me out too. I'd like to keep using tanks for my snakes, but after experiencing bad shed after bad shed they're going into tubes.

Sorry, I meant tubs.

I was making dinner while posting with a two year old running around getting into trouble. There is always a lot going on in my world.

Ah, gotcha!

Went ahead with the 20gallon long (thanks, 50% off sale at PetCo!) & transferred her bedding, mixing it with a bit of new to give her enough depth for burrows. She was all hide-y for about a day but was active again after that, & has been busy setting up new tunnels.:D
