Too hot?

I have a 20 long tank and a 18" charcoal in it. She has 3 hide spots, one on the hot, one on the cold and one in the middle. I have a UTH and a heat lamp with a 75 watt infrared bulb. im using multiple sheets of paper towel as her substrate since Im worried about newspaper ink. Couple of questions...
1. Should I change my substrate because of the UTH?
2. Should I leave my light on during the night? (I have a heater in my room to keep my room moderatley warm).

I would be worried about how hot it actually is over the uth on those paper towels, especailly with the light over top. You might try aspen shavings for a substrate, they like to burrow in it as well. I actually have cage carpet over my uth because I'm afraid they might burrow right to the bottom and come in direct contact with the glass over the uth, it's pretty hot. Invest in a thermometer and put it on the floor on the hot side with your light on and the uth to see what temp it is. If it's not above the low 80's, it's fine to keep them both on. Check the temp on the cool side as well, you don't want that getting too cold. Below 70 is too cold IMO. I keep my house pretty cool and have lights and the uth on all the time with 3/4 of the screen top covered in the winter to keep the heat in. I'm sure your corn will love the shavings, it provides some security too since they can hide in it, and it's easy to keep clean and looks nice. :)

You shouldn't have any problem with the paper towel- if it's hot enough to cause a problem, it's probably too hot. I use paper towel for my snakes in quarantine and the really messy ones with no problems what so ever- as far as the light is concerned JTGoff69 gave you some good advice but, if the temps are OK you could also leave that on too.

I use newspaper for all my snakes and haven't had any trouble with it except for new hatchlings in deli cups, alot of red ink, and spilled water. If the hatchling sits in it too long before I catch it, it tends to make the hatchling red. But it only lasts until the hatchling sheds again, nothing permanent and no actual harm done.

what type of thermometer should i get and any suggestions on where? i was guessing on home depot but thats a journey in this snow im in now. also once i do find the thermometer, just put it on the hot side w/ the lamp on and record the temp? also if i put some astroturf over the area where the UTH is, will it be fine (if it is indeed too hot). thanks guys

also i bought astroturf just to be sure my snake doesnt get burned. should i leave the astroturf on top or cover it w/ paper towels/news paper?

I just put in the astro turf with 2 thermometers and the temps read 85 - 87 ferenheit on the warm side and 77 farenheit on the cold side
