Transporting Snakes

It'd be good if I could take Suzy places (i.e. to my parents) - Suzy is 13-14 weeks old and I've had him for 3-4 of them. He quite tame with me now.

I was wondering if it's best to take his viv (empty water bowl) as it's only small, or to make a container ... and if so how big and what to put in it.

Should he be kept in the dark, or left clear so he can see me and my car.

The journey is about 5-10 mins.

Also, will it really stress him out? if it will I doubt I'll do it as I don't wanna cause him any unneccessary worries.

If it's not advisable, would it be better if he was bigger?

TIA

I wouldn't recommend it. I take mine to schools often to do talks about them. It always stresses them to some degree. Moving should be something you only do when necessary. IMHO

Yes I would agree that LONG trips usually stress your corns out... but a 5-10min drive wouldnt be that bad... the only thing that I can think about that could be more stressful is that your corn will be in a whole new enviornment... and I know this really stresses the corns out... I would say if you did take him somewhere I would put him in a tub that he couldnt see through... when you do this then your corn feels a little more confortable because the darkness makes it feel like its concealed... I dont think it would hurt to move your corn short distances...IMHO

Corns should have my job, then they would know what stress is!!!!

LOL (J/K)

But yah, traveling distances would suck for them! Short drives wouldn't be bad at all I don't think.

Cheers people,

I'll leave it 'till he's a bit older, then do it carefully and rarely.

Traveling a long way

when i get my snake, i would love to be able to take it to WI with me when i go in the summer for 2 or 3 weeks. its 600 miles though and we drive 10-11 hours straight through. so im thinking snakes wouldn't laike that, r would they be ok when they're older?

I decided to chance it the other day, and took Suzy to my parents ... I put his viv in a pillow case (complete except I removed most of the water from the dish). I strapped it in, put the heater on slightly and drove very slowly.

When I got there (5-10 mins later) I took the pillow case off and Suzy wasn't hiding, but was sniffing around and was completely relaxed. He then happily crawled onto my hand and was happy to look around his new surroundings.

Result :D

What I've done ~~~~~~:~

When I went to VA Beach last April I packed them all up. I drilled holes in sturdy plastic tupperware shoe boxes (holes on top) put the substrate in about two inches worth and a damp never used before wash cloth. I called ahead to find the nearest store for fuzzies lined them all up in the back of my suv and took off. It's about a ten hour drive. When I got there I set them up with fresh water and rotated them, one day each in one of the mess sun room cages. They all ate fine no problems and seemed ok. PLUS, I wasn't worried all week that they weren't getting good care while I was away. (hard to fine good snake sitters these days). I think you can read your snakes, if they seem ok with change then no worries. but if they get stressed then take it slow. If your viv is glass then think about the plastic, it might be safer for travel. Plus think about it, what else do they do for the day that they would or wouldn't do traveling in a safe and secure tub. It's not like their going to miss their favorite TV shows or want to play the license plate game with you while your driving? Sam ~~~~~~~~:~
