Traveling with my corn?

CassieK

This summer I am going to visit my family in Wyoming. It will be about an 18hour drive and we will be there for about 2 weeks. Is it ok to travel with your corn for that long he will be traveling in a 10gal tank (he is a little over 2 feet) He will have the UTH and i can have it plugged in while im driving with the thermistat and the therm. Will he be ok in his 10 gal for a couple weeks he is living in a 35gal right now? Do you think the UTH and thermostat would drain my battery at night when we stop to sleep for a couple hours?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions

Depending on the amout of watts or amps you will be using to power the UTH and thermostat, your battery will be slowly draining while the car is not running. My best guess would be to feed the snake before leaving and if no one is able to check on him/her just leave multiple water dishes in the tank so that it doesn't get too thirsty.. Other than that, I don't have much experience traveling w/ a snake... So I can't be of much help there. Anyway, best of luck!

Since you are travelling in the summer, you may have to be more concerned with too much heat than keeping him warm. When we moved to Oregon last summer from Las Vegas, had about 30 animals in the car with us (mostly snakes, but a couple of dogs, cats and a turtle). We were careful not to let the car get too hot when we stopped. It may get cool at night, but definately not down anywhere near freezing.

Generally, I would guess that a comfortable temperature in the car for you would also be good for the snake. Our "snake people" in Vegas also recommended not feeding the snake for at least 3 days before you leave and waiting a couple of days after you get there. You could probably plan for one feeding sometime around the first week that you've been there.

Everyone made it through our move safely---including the fish that we kept in a cooler.

we have an adapter for the car so that i can plug in his thermomiter and make sure it doesnt get to cold or to warm. Thanks for all the help. He is a really laid back snake and i dont think much bothers him but i just want to be sure that it wouldnt be to stressing and hard on him. I would hate for him to get sick.

Should I put him in the 10 gal a couple days before we go so he has time to adjust to it again?
Do you think that his food would travel ok as long as we kept it packed with ice or should i just find a place to buy them fro when i get there?

If you are traveling in the summer you shouldn't have to worry about plugging in the UTH. The snake probably wont need it. TBH if you are that concerned that it will get that chilly in the car, go get a hand warmer and wrap it up in some thick newspaper and put it under the bedding in the tank. It's heat with out the hassle of plugging things in. IMO Put the snake in the 10 gallon tank the night before you leave and just buy his food when you get there. Make sure you don't feed him for a least a few days prior to leaving. If you are only going to be gone a couple weeks he's only going to eat maybe 2 times. So should be easy enough to find food.

I wouldn't leave the water dish in the tank :) and I'd also remove any heavy hides, logs etc as they can shift while travelling and could crush him. You could put a very thick layer of aspen in for the trip, so he can burrow down into it and that will buffer him against being bumped around a bit :)

I wouldn't feed him for 3 or 4 days prior to the trip, to prevent regurge and leave him to settle for about 3 days once you're there before feeding again. The same would go for the return trip :)

I don't see any need to move him into the tank prior to the trip, he should be fine :)
As has previously been said, if the temp in the car is comfortable for you, it should be fine for your snake. If you can find somewhere local to where you are going, then it might be easier to buy his food once you get there :)

Hope that helps some, good luck :)

I'd leave him home with 2 water dishes and not worry about it. He'll be plenty hungry, but 2 weeks without food isn't going to hurt him any. In my opinon stress from travelling is worse than a missed meal.

I agree with Checkerbelly, I think it'd be best to leave him at home. However, 2 water dishes over two weeks won't be enough IMO, it'll all evaporate and you'll be left with a dehydrated snake. If you can get someone to come and change the water once every 2/3 days or so, that'd be great, and your snake would be fine not eating for 2 weeks. If you can't get anyone to change the water, then the best bet might be to follow the advice given on this thread for taking him.

All the best

David

I agree with the feeding point Chkrbly and snkdv made...(Like the abbr. ...LOL).
When ever I have had snakes shipped they arrive in little cotton bags, tied at the top, and then placed in insulated boxes with lots of shredded paper. It gets real cold here and they can travel like that for 24hrs.
