trinket snakes-humidity Q's

bella

mmm zombies....
well for the past couple of months i have been considering picking up a trinket snake-if they have one....fingers crossed- at a reptile expo in august. ever since i saw a picture of one i have fallen in love :) and it would be something a little different from my corns but still close in the husbandry aspects. i also like that the males tend to be on the smaller side. i have been trying to do as much research as i can but there is not alot out there.

my main concern was about keeping the humidity higher-since where i live the humidity is relatively low. i was org. planning on keeping it in a 10 or 15 gallon glass tank with a uth-until it gets bigger of course. and was wondering if keeping a moist hide in there 24-7 with misting once a day would be enough? or do i even have to keep a moist hide in there 24-7? possibly covering some of the screen top with something (ie plastic?) esp. once he will eventually upgrade to a bigger tank.

my other option was to use a sterelite tub, but since i have only used glass tanks so far i am a little apprehensive. using the 'search' i have read ppl just put the uth directly on the bottom with a therm. or rheo. but i am not sure if i trust this. i have also read using a buffer like glass or tile. but it wasn't mentioned how to attach the buffer.. just tape? the good thing about the tub is it should hold humidity better but i am scared i will somehow cause a fire hazard...

in both instances the enclosure would be lifted up on two wooden planks under each end. i would like to use glass but would i creating more work for myself in the end insteading of using plastic?
other than humidity i am pretty sure i have got everything else sorted.

sorry for all the rambling i am just anal and a worrier by nature so this is no exception :p

Raeanne, you are on the right track. If you use either glass aquaria or starilite tub you'll be fine. You will need to limit the circulation a little by covering half or 2/3 of the screen top to help keep humidity in. The UTH will work fine under either type of cage but you will need a good thermostat to regulate the heat. You need one with a probe that measures the temperature of the substraight, not the air.

You will definitely want a humid hide but in addition to that you should use a substraight that will hold moisture. Bed-a-Beast, Coconut husk, Cypress mulch, something like that.

Trinket snakes tend to be a little snappy. They are beautiful. Good luck.

thankx! i never thought to use one of those substrates, i was just gonna use repti-bark like i do for my corns. guess i was still thinking in corn care mode... but if i incorporate one of those substrates i should be able to get the humidity up.

this may be a dumb question.. but with the more "moisture holding" bedding, do they mold at all?? i have never used anything but the repti-bark so i don't know much about them.

oh and i thought of another Q. can the trinkets go on a feeding schedule similar to corns? from what i read it sounds like they can....but someone else may have a different opinion?

You will want the substraight to be barely damp, not wet. The substraights I mentioned are high in acid and don't promote mold.

Trinkets can be fed approx. once a week just like corns.
