Trouble with heat/humidity...!

How do you all put your thermostat probe lead in the viv? I think I'll have to make a small slit in the plastic part of the lid and enter it through there?

Just a clear-seal glass tank, with a plastic lid which has a big sliding glass panel on it. The plastic bit has vents on it, which I've used for the cool side.

Here's a pic...

I'd be inclined to ditch the heatlamp, and have the thermostat probe between the heatmat and the bottom of the viv (with heatmat outside, under the viv, controlled by the thermostat. Hatchling corns are real escape artistes, and excellent at getting out through small holes!) Have the thermometer inside, with it's probe directly on the glass over the heatmat.
I'd also hold off on feeding the corn until you know the temperatures are good, as a few days without food are better than risking a regurge.

Nice Setup! :)

Also if you want to keep the heatlamp, corn snakes can't see red light so the lights dont disturb them (Nocturnal remember!). :)

Yeh I won't be feeding him until Wednesday. The reason why I was going to put the temp gauge outside, is 'cos I can't think of a good way to stick it to the glass inside - keeping in mind I'll have to wash it every month. I don't know if blue-tac would hold it with the heat/humidity and I wouldn't want him getting crushed!

I take it then that the heat lamp is not essential for basking? The one in the photo is the one that the pet shop were using for him - but it's 60W. I was advised today to buy a 40W and so I have changed it. Stil think I should ditch it? It looks really nice lit up...

The light isn't necessary for them, they've got their heat gradient that's what they need.
I'd still worry about him burning himself if it were me.

Hot side is at 30C. That's what the thermostat is set at. I don't know what the cool side is. I do know however that he prefers that side by far... I can check for you by moving the temp probe over if you want?

30 with just the heatmat? With the probe directly on the mat? Is the mat inside or under the tank?(Sorry for all the questions,it just makes it easier to help)

I'm just glad you're helping! :)

I have the probe placed on the very bottom of the tank, resting on the glass bottom. The heatmat is underneath the tank (outside of it) and resting on some polystyrene sheets.

Should be fine like that. Just check the min/max temps a few times over the next day or so. With plenty of hides (looroll tubes squashed a bit flatter are great for hatchlings) scattered over the floor of the viv will mean the snake can feel safe and thermoregulate while still feeling safe. My snakes also get bunches of very tasteless flowers from Wilkinsons to hide under, climb on and shed through! (I did use to get the nicer bunches of fake ivy, but the flowers are cheaper to replace when I get fed up getting poop off them)

Just remember, the light is really for your benifit not for his. But remember if you're going to turn it on at night you should get a red bulb otherwise it's going to disturb him.

Thanks lil.

BTW, I was getting mixed up talking about the thermometer/hygrometer and the thermostat earlier.

I need to make a small hole in the lid to get the thermostat sensor in there. I will tape it to the bottom of the tank, and also the thermometer for the next few days, though they are both exactly the same which means the thermostat is accurate.

Cheers, I'll make sure to get some photos of him up when I can handle him. :)
