trying to escape

hey i have noticed that lately sheba has been trying to escape from her cage is this normal or just a phase or does she not like it in there?

All of mine do that too. I suppose it's rather opressive being stuck in a small plastic/glass box (small compared with the outdoors) when they would like to be roaming around out in the open world...

Yeah, corns like to spend their time looking for an escape route and their very good at it, too. This is why they are called the houdinis of the snake world.

Bit of a leading question, but doesn't this behaviour worry you ? I hate it when mine do that. Zoos have been closed down when their animals start behaving like that. Isn't it symptomatic of stress, or am I just thinking of mammalian behaviour ?

Cheers
Kel

i wouldn't worry about the behavior all snakes are always looking for a way out and guess what they could do it with there eyes closed they are brilliant at escaping and unless you find where they got out from the next time they try to escape they will do it in less than a quarter of the time!!

and who said snakes were dumb!!!:D

haha sheba got out but i fixed her i put rocks on the top to hold it down now she can't get out. thanks i also have noticed the lately like the last week or so she has become very active like before she would stay in her hide the entire time now at all hours (i bet she sleeps when i'm at school 8-6) she is out playing around. is this normal?

my snake goes through phases where he wanders around even during the day sometimes, but usually it is truly just a phase and he stops after a couple days or so. If your snake doesn't, check to make sure that nothing is bothering her. (temperature, substrate, hides, water, humidity...basically anything. some snakes are terribly picky about the littlest things!)

escape

My nikki spends all night looking for a way to get out of the tank. Thats when its must active and when I handle it and put her on the floor she always runs for under the couch. I think its just normal for them to try and escape:cool:

my corn snake, Jeff, seems to get restless as soon as he has digested his meal. I think they naturally have to be on the move hunting for food in the wild. Still, it bothers me to think that he is unhappy in his cage :(

It bothers me too

Suzy is still very young and only 14" (ish) long and his tank is only about 4 gallons.

I've just bought a 100 gallon tank which I shall make escape-proof so that he will be able to have a lot of space - that'll make me (and him) feel better!

(Don't worry people, he'll have a lot of hides both warm and cool, he'll not get it until he's bigger, he'll be housed alone, and will have a substrate that allows easy spot cleaning)
