two pinkies or larger pinkie?

MaxxOwner

First time Corn Owner
If I decide to feed Maxx more food, should I move up to two pinkies or just buy one larger mouse?

If you are feeding one pinky than I say feed two for a feeding or two so he can adjust to a larger meal. Then you can move up to one fuzzy. If you can get them, you can move up to peach fuzzy first then fuzzy.

Good luck

i moved from 1 pinky to 1 fuzzy with no problems, it shouldnt be a problem as long as the meal is 1-1.5 times the width of the snake.

I know this sounds silly - but as this is the first snake I've really owned (I'm not counting the garter snake I had for two months that rarely ate)... I am worried about feeding him something too big and then having him regurge. He seems to be really stretching his head just to get a pinkie through, yet... once it's down you can barely see it...

Their little faces can stretch REALLY far =)

Pic is on here a couple times, but it shows how far the can stretch hehe (this mouse BARELY made a lump in his tummy)

If it is not more than 1.5 times his body size (where it is larger), you should be fine. But I realise that I had less regurge if I give mine 2 pinkies for 2 meals before I jump them to fuzzy size. Some would be ok if they would jump directly, but some are a bit more difficult.

Try 2 pinkies for 2-3 meals and than 1 fuzzy.

Good Luck!

should a 5 month old 15" snake be eating fuzzies already?

I just wish there was a chart somewhere that said...

12"~15" = 2oz pinkie
15" ~ 18" = 4oz pinkie or fuzzy
18" ~ 22" = 6oz fuzzy

Well, there's no such chart because all snakes are different, and weight and girth are better indicators of appropriate prey size than length. I would think that a 15" corn is probably too small for fuzzies. I don't usually move up to fuzzies until a corn is 25-30 grams.

Peach Fuzzies

Yeah, what Lennycorn said. If you can find peach fuzzies try those. I just fed Ivory her first one an hour ago. The pinkies just didn't seem to satisfy anymore even on 2 per feeding but the fuzzies looked awfully big. Also like some of the others suggested feed 2 for a few feeds and then move up. I fed Ivory 2 for about 6 feedings first and she just got the peach fuzz down with no problem. Good Luck!

Based on personal experience I would say try the fuzzy. We were dubious when the pet store suggested it because it looked huge compared to the pinky. We were amazed he got his little mouth around it but he had no problems at all. This has repeated itself with the adult mouse sizes as well.

hehe thats an awesome pic...he looks pretty happy :crazy02:

Is 15" not a bit small for a 5 month snake. Mine hit 20" at 4 months and I haven't measured her since. Is his too small or mines too big. Just to confirm that no power feeding is going on she only gets one meal a week. I know they all grow at different rates but what do you think?

Snakes do grow at different rates. It also depends on how often they are fed. My little snow corn didn't hit 15" until she was 6 months old, but before I got her (when she was 3 1/2 months old), she was only being fed every 10-14 days. That is, just enough to keep her alive, but not enough for her to really grow. She was also only 11 inches long. Once I started feeding her weekly, she began to grow, and really took off when I switched her to fuzzies. Now she is 16 months old and 33" long.

Thanks Kvlt... Treasure loves the camera LOL =)

If I went by the age the pet store gave me, Treasure was 11 inches at 3-4 months (in between there somewhere, they didn't know exact hatch date) he was tiny, but he was big around (moved to fuzzies after 3 pink meals, as they left NO lump is his tummy at all). Feeding the snake will depend solely on each individual snake... example... Treasure is a 2004, Hunter is a 2003. Treasure eats 30-45g "super" jumbo mice, Hunter eats large fuzzies. As you can see, age has nothing to do with meal size hehe =)

If you are able, take a picture of the widest part of your snake, with a pink or fuzzy beside him, and we should be able to tell you (approximately) which he should be eating. I'd say one pic from the side, pink near camera, snake behind pink. And one pic from the top. This should accurately show us the dimensions of snake and meal =D

Sorry to intrude in this thread but here's a pic of my 16" reverse okeetee munching on a small pinkie, what do you think? Does it look too small a meal? :shrugs: , Feeding 1 every 5 days....

FEEDING

I doubt I would be able to get a photo of Maxx with a pinkie - he attacks it before I can get him completely into the feeding container.

If it becomes an issue I thought about seeing up a tripod and taking a photo of the pinkie, then Maxx - I can then use my graphics program to merge the two together...

I'm going to feed him two pinkie tomorrow and see how he does. I measured him yesterday and he is 15.9 inches. I'm also going to try weighing him to see how much he is growing.

This is my Anery `Granite` with a fuzzie. I don't think she has eaten one this big yet. The pics ain't great for a number of reasons.

1) she is in shed and rather cranky
2) she was not getting the fuzzie but wanted it
3) it was still frozen so I didn't want her to have it
4) it is not feeding day till tomorrow
5) my hands smelt like slightly defrosted fuzzie

I am happy this is the right size for her what do you think? She gets one a week. She is 5 months old on roughly the 10th of December. Is she big for her age?

Bribrian, yes I think its a little small.. maybe try a large pinky =) That one doesn't look like it would leave a lump at all hehe.

Shrimply, that fuzzy looks like it may be a little large, but its hard to tell... in one pic, it looks okie, but in the other it looks a little big ~,~

Yeah I thought that although i am sure she will manage it. It was the largest out of the five i bought so she can get the four slightly smaller ones first.
