Two Questions

Bobo's Mama

proud corn mommy!
I have two basic questions that I've been wondering for awhile:

Does anyone else use this thermometer with any success?

http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441808192&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030048&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1124463298157

I've been using it now for about 3 months and I like it quite a bit. There is no external cord to bother with. I just lay it on top of the substrate over where the UTH is and it gives me accurate readings all day long. My warm side ranges from 78 to 84 depending on whether the AC is running. I just tend to notice that everyone is always recomending the ones you get at Wal-mart that have the probe.

My other question is about feeding. I've been feeding my snake rat pinkies for the last 4 feedings (every 6 days) They fill her up just as much as the mouse fuzzies she was on (big lump, just bumped her up from 2 pinkies 5 feedings ago). I got a pregnant rat from the pet store and she had 11 babies so that's how I came across the pinkie rats. Well my question is, do you think I should alternate between feeding mouse fuzzies and rat pinks so that she doesn't become accustomed to eating rats instead of mice, and someday down the road refuse the mice? She seems to be a totally non-picky eater, has never refused a food item, and even ate for my grandpa when I was on a trip, has eaten live, frozen, mice and rats, in any container you can think of, half hanging out of it, in the dark, in the light, with noise going on and in total silence, head first, butt first, sideways (well almost, she sort of bent the pinky in half...it was weird) So I guess I'm pretty sure she'd go back to mice, but just wanted some experienced opinions on the subject.

Thanks

Hi Bobo's Mama. I bought that exact product (Fluker's Thermometer/Hydrogemeter) a few months back, and I really like it. Most of my snakes are now in an Animal Plastics rack with a Helix DBX-1000 thermostat, but I still like to monitor temps and humidity myself. It's nice, because you basically just place it wherever you need to monitor. I might even buy a couple more of the Fluker's T/Hs.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a somewhat immportant question, and I've been making alot of threads recently. Ok, it IS temperature related though. Do i want a reading of 85 or so ON the substrate, or against the glass?(just built a rheostat following instructions from this site)

that would be a good substrate tempature, but be carful because if your snake burrows then you might want to check the temp a couple inches down in the substrate. it would be fine then if in the substrate it was 85* and on top it was only 83-80*

bumping up my thread now... I was hoping that someone could help me with my questions. I know my posts are always long and probably lame or boring, also I suppose it could have gotten lost along the way, especially with that dumn boob thread:rolleyes: . That was too funny, anyway, any ideas????

I think Roy answered your first question.
You will have to wait until others stop read the boob post to answer your 2nd question. Are you breeding rats? How big is your snake? I would just feed f/t mice but I just like using the KISS theory.
Just my thoughts

I'm not breeding them at all, I got them by mistake (the babies I mean). I bought 2 female rats from a petstore. I bought 2 females because I had no intentions of breeding them and just wanted pets. Well, as it turns out, both females I bought were pregnant. One had babies and I froze them and have been feeding them to my snake. The other one had babies, but my husband refused to let me freeze them so we are raising them and will sell them back to the petstore or put ads in the paper for them. I just wanted to know if I should alternate between feeding her the rat pinkies and mouse fuzzies, so she doesn't get hooked on rats, I've still got 8 of them left and definately want to use them, it would be a real waste not too.

Sorry, thanks for clearing that up.
I think you should be find. I know that the nutrition is better with fuzzy than pinkys put I know nothing with rats pinkys to mice fuzzy. but I say use them up.

Good Luck
