Under Tank Heater

I just purchased a 20-gallon long glass terrarium that is 12 inches deep by 30 inches long for my corn snake. My question is what size UTH should I get, The ZooMed 10 to 20 gallon UTH is about 10'' by 6" or the Exo Terra Heat Wave that is 10.5' x 11".

Thanks

You could use either. Aim for covering up to 1/3 of the floor space of the tank.

Make sure you attach the UTH at one end, not in the centre so there is the maximum thermal gradient. Ideally you will have hides for your snake in both the cool and the warm end.

I would also HIGHLY recommend using either a rheostat or a thermostat with an undertank heater as they can get surprisingly hot, and this allows you to control the temperature reached.

Be careful with what you stand your cage on so there is an airgap between the surface the cage is standing on and the heatmat.

Skye,
I have a question for you;
My snake will not, does not get near the "heating pad" end of the tank. I notice that you are in Kansas, I'm in N.C. and right now I'm wearing "long-johns" in the house! He is eating well, digesting perfect. (74° cold side), is it possible it is Snake by snake???

Remember I'm new at this?

I have a viv which is about 82F hot and 75cool. The Miami Corn which lives in it always stays at the cool end and does not go on the heatmat area. Dont Worrie about it 5bandit5.

To some degree I think you have to trust the snake to know what it wants in terms of heat, and so as long as you continue to provide the choice - i.e. a thermal gradient, then the snake will be where it wants to be.

Now this is more complicated if you only have one hide as the snake may chose security over temperature and lie in the hide whereever it is rather than be in the correct temperature. However, if you have more than one hide in more than one temperature, and your snake is eating and digesting just fine - no worries!

My sunglow will go on his heat side for about 6 hours right after he eats then moves to his cool side. I would assume he does it to help digest his food. But other then after eating he says on his cool side.

Hey Everybuddy,

As usual SneakySnake has made a liar out of me! Had to go up a notch in "mouse size". Took him 6mins. to get it down, but he's been on the "heater side" ever since?

All New Snake Owners: listen to these people, they truly know what they are talking about!

Expect the unexplicable, snakes do have a mind of their own!

Mega Thanks To All!

Fortunately, if given the chance, snakes know what snakes want! Amazing how that works :)

I bought the ZooMed brand just last week and I've seen some great improvements. The snake goes into the hide with the UTH after eating and comes out 2 or 3 days later to go to her other hide. The temperatures are great and it costs so little in electricity bills. I haven't tried the Exo-Terra brand but I would like to know what those who have think of it. Is it a good UTH? Sam

We have one of each for our snakes. The only real difference to me is that the ZooMed brand is produced with a little higher quality IMHO. Also the Exo-Terra covers a slighter larger surface area for the same size tank/heater. I regularly measure temps with a digital thermometer and they both do a good job of maintaining a consistent temp in the 85-90 deg. F. range)

Cheers,
Jason
