under tank heating question

So I gave in and am getting my husband a corn snake for his birthday. We have gotten everything needed except the snake (and food). But while he was opening the under the tank heating pad thing it said that you werent supposed to use it with normal substrate because the snake care burrow under the substrate and burn itself on the bottom. It suggests using some reptile carpet on the bottom of the cage under the substrate. Is this common? Are they trying to sell me something we dont need? I just wanted to make sure because I just want this animal to be happy and healthy. Any thoughts would help greatly as we are getting the snake saturday.
Thanks
Preita

Depends how hot your under the tank heater gets, if it only gets to around 90f, it should be fine. do you have a probe thermometer?, if you do set it on top of the uth with it attached to the buttom of the tank and see how hot it gets.
if it gets to hot like if you cant touch it they thats to hot for you corn, and you might need to get a power dimmer for it(forgot what its called ^^). hope this helps alittle.. I'm sure someone else with more knowledge then me will chime in soon lol and i hope you and your husband love your little corn.

First off, Hi and welcome. :wavey:

The package is right ...... to a point. Any uncontrolled heat source has the potential to burn the animal. What they forget to mention (conveniently) is that they can simply be controlled so they do not reach dangerous temps. I would suggest using a thermostat, either store bought or there is a great thread here (somewhere) on how to make your own rheostat quite simply. (please someone post the link to that thread)

Unless you like the look of the "carpet" there is no need to use it. Bedding such as aspen (most recommended for numerous reasons) is perfectly O.K. with the use of a UTH.

Hope this helps.

alright, that sounds great, I will turn on the pad tonight when I get home and test how hot it gets after an hour or two. That is a great suggestion. Yes we did get one of those digital themometers.

lol, for being my husbands pet I deffinately have done more of the research, but Im excited for it. and we have the coolest reptile store down here called prehistoric pets.

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum, Im sure I will be here a lot more :D
