Under the Tank Heater question

I'll be getting my boy within the next few weeks and I'm... still not sure of the UTH thing. I've been getting other things for him and it's the next one on my Magic List of Stuff to Buy for the Kid.

But when I get to the store, it says 'perfect for 10 gal cage' or 5 gallon or 20 or whatever. But is that mean it's the same length as a ten gallon and I should buy a five gallon if I'm only planning on making half the warm side and have a ten gallon?

Or by being perfect for a ten gallon, does that mean they figured someone would only be doing half?

Hot damn, I'm just happy I figured out those clip-things for the top of the cage. XD;; Like. Just now. I'm over paranoid and it'll probably have like... six of those stupid things on there (along with heavy-duty tie-downs from Home Depot nearby Just in Case) but I've heard the lovely stories of babeh snakes becoming escapees.

Arg! Fun times!

It means it good for 1/2 the tank - you can always compare the size of the heater to the bottom of a tank in the store!

Don't worry - everyone is nervous their first time around! :) I'm sure you will make a perfect little home for the little guy! And congrats on the new snake! Can't wait to see pics when you get him!

You can go by the sizing on the package, get the 10-20gal model for a 10 or 20 gal long tank.

They tend to be cheaper online. You'll also need a digital thermometer with a probe and a rheostat or thermostat to control the UTH at the proper temperature. Without something to control them they get far too hot.

I've been trying to figure out where to get the thermostat, exactly. I have the temp/humidity gauge but.. thermostats are beyond me on where to get them. XD;

That's easy. The best place I've found so far (and the place I just ordered my stat from) is Reptilebasics.com. Rich is the most awesome guy and will answer any question. He ships the stuff the same day and it gets there really fast from what I've heard. A good stat to get would be the Johnson or Ranco. They're $75 but really worth the expense when you think that it's to protect your snake. If you have a bit more to spend ($110-$150) you can get the proportional stats like Helix and herpstat. Top o the line.

Hope that helps...I've been researching this topic for months now. :)

If it says 5 gal that means it fits on a 5 gallon and should roughly cover 1/3, which gives you a warm 1/3 a gradient 1/3 and a cool 1/3. You wouldn't want heat under the whole tank. Your thermometer will be your friend as it is the gradient temperture you are shooting for.
You are a better person than I, I still can't get those friggin clips to work. I don't think you will need tie-downs and clips. The one tank I have with 2 clips has an 05' Creamsicle big guy and he tests the top a lot. The little guys are good at getting out small holes, like I had one get out a hole in the lid meant for an electric cord, luckily she didn't go far.
Once you have your baby safe in the viv, both of you will be much happier good luck, susan

If you don't want to spend $75 and up on a higher end thermostat, you can get a low end thermostat like a ZooMed 500R for about $23 plus shipping at various online stores, like reptilesupply.com.
They have the UTHs and other caging accessories much cheaper than at pet stores.

Thank you all for your experiance and answers. I've looked into it and purchased a Kritterz Sauna Zone Heat mat. Well. My father did, upon hearing I was looking for one. I was just wondering how we know what thermostats are compatable with it - or with any! I've checked the sites and I'm afraid I just don't know. :\

There's no issue of compatibility. The thermostat is like an outlet.Instead of plugging the UTH into the wall you plug it into the thermostat,and then the thermostat into the wall.

The only way there would be an issue is if there were like European plugs involved heh. You're welcome, the only thing to remember is to just make sure that the thermostat can handle the same or more watts as the heater.
The Reptitherm 500r is good for 500 watts, so I doubt you'll have problems with that.

Are there thermostats you can buy that control more then one heat mat? Like, ones that have two or three plugs?:confused: Sorry, it's prolly a noob question.

Most of them do have more than one outlet, but at least the one I have the repti therm 500r doesn't have multiple probes.
I'm pretty confident that there are some out there, I just can't remember what they are right now.

It doesnt have multiple probes but itll control two heat mats, theres two plug receptacles. I have one that controls more then one heating device, the probe is in one tank, but I have digital thermometers in both tanks, and the temps are identical....if that makes any sense.

Well I err...already know what the Reptitherm does because I have one, that's why I said I wasn't sure about other thermostats.

I know.....I was just making a point she didnt need one with multiple probes.

Well I know that I personally don't have the room to keep two tanks side by side, my only option would be racked one on top of the other, and since heat rises...well I would need one with two probes.

Apparently, these clips aren't my bitch as much as I thought they were. The ones that CAME with the cage are cool but the others don't have the little clippy things to slide under and.. I dunno. They just bend and...don't cling. XD;;
