"Braining" does not refer to hitting the mouse over the head. To brain a mouse, you puncture or crack open the skull to release the fluids in hopes that the scent will intice a reticent snake to eat.

wow, there are so many different ways of feeding in here!!! crazy. i always have the same container set aside, a little "butter" tub with holes in the top, and i put the frozen mouse in it and let it sit for a while. it's not like i'm watching it thaw. i set my watch, come back in an hour, put it on top of the viv, under the heat light, for about 3-4 min, and then feed. no prob, very very little work. it's usually warm, never been wet, and my snakes take them every time. i must admit though, that i'm probably not feeding often enough. my current snakes are both 6 months and 4 months and i feed them about every two weeks. usually about 10 days. one is significantly smaller than the other. so, i was guessing that the bigger one was female. i'm pretty sure that the bigger one is. is there a difference between sizes and sexes? as far as i remember there is, but i'm too lazy to look it up at the moment. heh.

At that age, they should be feeding once a week, not every other week. How much are you giving them per feeding, and what size?

You said nothing about swift blows to the head. You said to brain a live mouse. They are two different things. Braining means to cut the mouse's head open and squeeze his brain out, smearing the brain material over the mouse's head to entice a reluctant feeder to eat. This should only be done to a mouse that is already dead.

Because cutting open a live mouse's head is the ultimate in cruelty.

Fill a cup half way with water, stick it in the microwave, on high, for 40 - 60 seconds. While the water is heating up, go to the freezer and get the mouse. Stick the mouse in a little plastic bag.
By now the water should be hot enough, put the bagged mouse inside the cup filled with hot water and use a fork to submerge the mouse. Wait 5 minutes.

I do this with Gerbils which are slightly bigger then mice.

jaxom,

i'm feeding them the right size, i just don't feed them once a week. i started out that way, and one seemed slightly reluctant. with once every 10 days or so they both eat right away. sometimes, if it's a smaller mouse, i'll feed him two. i play it by "ear", heh. both of my current snakes are quite healty. strong and quite active. they both are shedding very well regularly, so i know they're growing normally. they seem quite happy. they even have smiles. ;)

Exactly what I do. How long it's submerged depends on what food size I'm thawing out.
