Uno, the Human-Imprinted Pet Chicken

Taceas

USW = UB313
Meet Uno. A delightful little hen we hatched out from our own flock. The daddy is Red, a big Buff Orpington, and the mother I believe was an Araucana (they lay Easter-egg colored eggs). I believe it was an Araucana due to the grey legs that Uno seems to have developed, and only the Araucana's in the flock have them. Plus the body shape seems to fit with the Araucana's as well.

Here's Uno hatching, "Push!"

Here's Uno the day she hatched after finding her legs, ain't she cute?!

Here's Uno at a month old...a bit more fuzzy and precocious.

And here's Uno as of last Sunday, falling asleep on my husband's shoulder:

When she's out in the yard, she follows you around and wants to be a part of everything you do. Whether that be going for a walk or weeding the flowerbed. You never know, there may be bugs involved!

When she was old enough to be put in the chicken pen with the other adult chickens, she didn't know how to act like a chicken and act like the lowest rung on the social ladder. She never backed down from a threat, so after two days in there, she developed a nasty neck wound. The skin on the back of her neck was literally torn to shreds. But amazingly the quick healing nature of birds, and a lot of wound cleaning and bandage changes, she's all healed up and has feathers back.

But, sadly the damage was done. She still doesn't know how to act around other chickens and when they come near, she runs for "mom and dad" if we're around. And if not, she'll walk up to the deck where she knows the patio door is and sit beside the dog on the rug.

Right now she shares an 8' x 10' dog pen with a band of Misfits. The Misfits include:

- A lonely male Pigeon who thinks Uno is his mate. They have the cutest relationship going on. He struts and coos for her. When he gets out to go fly around, if she's out in the yard he'll come swooping down to land near her and she'll run over and trample him, which just seems to encourage his flirting. I even witnessed him trying to mate with her. Poor guy. :awcrap:

- A Speckled Sussex hen named Jenny. Besides Uno, Jenny is the lowest on the social ladder in the chicken house, and is severely picked on. Plus it wasn't helped by the fact that she wanted to start sitting on eggs, despite my repeated encouragement I didn't need anymore chicks.

- And 3 later hatched out progeny from the flock that are still too small to move over to the bigger pen.

Thanks for reading the novel about my totally non-corn related hobby that is my soul passion and took the time to post about on a cornsnakes dedicated website.

Be sure to check back for a continuation of the series, as the next episode will feature Ubby-Dubby, a 2006 Light Brahma hen and her sexy feathered legs!

Sounds like you definately have your hands full! But it also sounds like a lot of fun! Very cute pictures of Uno as well.

Misty,
Great chicken! I've always wanted chickens~ Scott (husband) has promiced a location that allows some livestock when we move again next summer. I want chickens (and a goose!)! I'll be picking your brain for recomendations once we make the move!

What a sweety~ follows you around doing bug patrol. She has a job! LOL!

Blue Moon

I noticed the beer in the picture. Im wondering if Uno likes beer. I know when Im sitting down with one, my Sun conure "Larry" gets all excited. I have to let him out of the cage and he doesnt settle down untill I let him lick the bottle . I dont know hes a freak. Your picture just reminded me of Larry.

By the way I LOVE chickens also. My favorite breeds by far are the Rocks, standard cochins, and Crested polish. Uno looks like a real sweetie, so cute!

No they are not the silky ones. They are known for thier green-bluish "easter eggs". Here is a picture of a silkie... this is the Buff bearded variety. Thier feathers are almost like silky hair and they have black skin. Silkies are also very small chickens called bantams.

The Silky ones are Japanese Silky Bantams, at least that's the common name I've heard in the 4H circle. The smaller, fancy breeds wouldn't do well around here especially with the majority of my chickens being larger breeds. Plus the pen is dirt bottomed, and when it rains, its muddy...so any short legged, fluffy feathered bird would be an absolute mess in a short amount of time. Although most Bantam/Bannie hens make excellent mother hens.

Brahma's lay brown eggs. As far as I know the only colored egg layers are Araucana and Americanas. Ours lay Blue, Green, and Rose colored eggs. Aside from my Araucanas, I only have brown egg chickens. I have always felt white eggs are inferior in flavor and quality. Whether that's true on a farm where they're fed a richer variety of food, I'm not sure. But most of the white egg chickens are bred for high egg count and showy bodies, neither of which really concern me. But I know that even amongst the overly pallid store eggs, white eggs still don't taste as rich as brown eggs.

Uno doesn't even know what beer is. Our Quaker would throw a fit however if you didn't let her have a sip of whatever it was you were drinking. She loved Rum and Coke.

Uno is more refined and prefers moles, freckles, and other similar skin spots. :poke:

Cheryl, a goose? Are you daft? Geese are downright mean! We have 3 ducks which are freaking hilarious to watch. Their antics and vocalizations are so giggle worthy.

ohhhhhh.... i want whatever hatches out of that bottom right egg! think maybe it's a dragon?! he will come home with me, and join my zoo, and i shall love him forever!

ok, brief trip but necessary!

i adore the pic of uno on your husband's shoulder! that's just too cute!

Loved the "novel" about your non-corn hobby. It was fun to read and I look forward to the next episode about Ubby-Dubby! Uno is beautiful. I love that picture of her on you Hubby's shoulder.
