Meet Uno. A delightful little hen we hatched out from our own flock. The daddy is Red, a big Buff Orpington, and the mother I believe was an Araucana (they lay Easter-egg colored eggs). I believe it was an Araucana due to the grey legs that Uno seems to have developed, and only the Araucana's in the flock have them. Plus the body shape seems to fit with the Araucana's as well.
Here's Uno hatching, "Push!"
Here's Uno the day she hatched after finding her legs, ain't she cute?!
Here's Uno at a month old...a bit more fuzzy and precocious.
And here's Uno as of last Sunday, falling asleep on my husband's shoulder:
When she's out in the yard, she follows you around and wants to be a part of everything you do. Whether that be going for a walk or weeding the flowerbed. You never know, there may be bugs involved!
When she was old enough to be put in the chicken pen with the other adult chickens, she didn't know how to act like a chicken and act like the lowest rung on the social ladder. She never backed down from a threat, so after two days in there, she developed a nasty neck wound. The skin on the back of her neck was literally torn to shreds. But amazingly the quick healing nature of birds, and a lot of wound cleaning and bandage changes, she's all healed up and has feathers back.
But, sadly the damage was done. She still doesn't know how to act around other chickens and when they come near, she runs for "mom and dad" if we're around. And if not, she'll walk up to the deck where she knows the patio door is and sit beside the dog on the rug.
Right now she shares an 8' x 10' dog pen with a band of Misfits. The Misfits include:
- A lonely male Pigeon who thinks Uno is his mate. They have the cutest relationship going on. He struts and coos for her. When he gets out to go fly around, if she's out in the yard he'll come swooping down to land near her and she'll run over and trample him, which just seems to encourage his flirting. I even witnessed him trying to mate with her. Poor guy. :awcrap:
- A Speckled Sussex hen named Jenny. Besides Uno, Jenny is the lowest on the social ladder in the chicken house, and is severely picked on. Plus it wasn't helped by the fact that she wanted to start sitting on eggs, despite my repeated encouragement I didn't need anymore chicks.
- And 3 later hatched out progeny from the flock that are still too small to move over to the bigger pen.
Thanks for reading the novel about my totally non-corn related hobby that is my soul passion and took the time to post about on a cornsnakes dedicated website.
Be sure to check back for a continuation of the series, as the next episode will feature Ubby-Dubby, a 2006 Light Brahma hen and her sexy feathered legs!
