Update on our Christmas Snake

Well, it's been just over a week since we got our new snake. I think she is acclimating quite nicely to her new home, and also to me! She is spending more and more time out of her hide, exploring, and finding new places to just chill out. She has been laying out in the back of her viv, stretched out where she can watch everything happening in the room, but still feel kind of hidden. She sometimes comes to the front, and lifts her head up to check me out. I think it's so cute when she does that. The other day, she was doing it, and I started talking to her, and then she started flicking her little tongue like she wanted to smell me, so I slowly put my hand in her viv a few inches away from her to see what she would do. She sat still for a moment, just watching, and then slowly turned her head and moved toward my hand. I couldn't believe it. She actually put her face right up to my hand and smelled it with her little tongue! She didn't seem frightened at all. I have been letting her behavior be my guide, and yesterday, I decided she was ready to try a short period of being held. She is so bright-eyed, and curious! She didn't curl up when I held her at all. She just slowly wandered around my hands and arms, sniffing away. She lifted her head up to get a better look at my face, and I swear she recognized me as the face she sees outside her viv talking to her all the time. I only held her for about 3 minutes, but I honestly don't think she was bothered by it in the least. I read from a few people on here that their snakes like to drink after being handled, so when I put her back, I kept watching her, and sure enough, she went to her water dish and started drinking! It was adorable! I hope I am reading her behavior correctly, and she is feeling as comfortable as I think she is. This morning I woke up to find her hanging out up in the tree thing I made for her. She was climbing around on it for a bit, and now she's curled up on it, maybe sleeping?

Tomorrow will be her first feeding. It has been 2 weeks since her last, and just over a week since she came home. I am both nervous and excited. I am really hoping she takes her food without any problems. It seems to me like she feels safe, and comfortable, but I'm no expert! I can read a cat, no problem, but snakes are not as easy!

She should eat very easily at 2 weeks. If not, pour boiling water over it to heat it nice and warm. Then she will. Good luck.
