Updates on Oro and I

Hello everyone!

Last thread I made, I explained I was in a bad situtation with my little corn snake Oro and I, and I wanted to give you all an update as I had promised. <3

Well, plans have changed. I am in Maryland right now living with my Grandmother, however soon I will be moving to Colorado with my little guy. My mother is driving out as soon as she buys herself an SUV to get my girlfriend and I (as well as Oro) and take us back with her to Denver to stay with her until we can get an apartment of our own. And my mother gratefully said even if we don't get an apartment right away, all of us are welcome with her and she can drive to our weekly pet store stop.

However my next question this round is what can I do to keep Oro safe in a car ride for 4 days or so. D: I have no other way to move him safely because I don't think I can fly with a hissling, or take a train safely.

Also I may have a bit of a snake war with the person keeping Oro right now, as she's growing very attached to him. However, I think she respects that he's my child and my love for him is more then a match against her.

Regardless though, any suggestions for safe snake transport in a car are greatly appreciated. I would use that nifty search tool, except I don't know what type of keywords to put in. XD

Hey! Whenever I travel, I just use a ziploc container with air holes (the appropriate size-- since mine is an '08, I use one that's only slightly bigger than a deli cup) *or* you can use a small critter keeper (http://www.f3images.com/IMD/250/LE20025/LE20025_99.jpg) if you think you'll travel multiple times. I normally fill halfway with aspen substrate so that there's plent of burrow room to keep them from shifting around in the car, and I normally use a large handwarmer taped to the side of the container. You can put it on the bottom, but you have to remove it periodically to keep it from getting too hot. For a four day trip, you can simply buy four of them for $4 (they're cheap) and change it daily.

If you handle your snake a lot, call me crazy, but I think it's comforting to hold them at night on "breaks" from travelling and make them feel more at home. Also, you ensure that they're warm. =)

My snake seems to almost enjoy travelling-- he frequently comes out and sits atop the substrate so he can watch what I'm doing/what's out the window, funny enough! So that's worked for me quite well.) If your snake is excessively nervous, you might think about putting him in a pillowcase/tshirt inside of his temporary container and not disturbing him at all.

I made the trip from Denver to Daytona Beach about 6 months ago, and let me tell you, you're going to be lucky only having one snake! There was my dad, my partner Tony, me, and 23 snakes in the pickup truck.
I just put them all in their own individual tubs with paper towels on the bottom. Make sure that you feed AT LEAST 3 days before the trip! You don't want them traveling on a full belly. I would also avoid handling during the trip. The poor little boy is going to be stressed out enough.
When you stop at night, provide a small water dish (like a gatorade lid, or something like that).

Where at in Denver are you going to be? If you're going to be anywhere near Colfax and Wadsworth, check out the Scales n Tails right around there. That's the best of their three (or maybe it's 4 now?) stores.

I'm going to be in the Denver/Aurora area. My mom is a student over at the Bel Rea tech institute actually. :3 If I can figure out where that store is, I'll try heading over there! My fear whenever my little guy and I have moved has always been if I have to take him off live feed. He likes playing with his food, and even more so when it gives a bit of a chase lol.

I do handle him often, and granted it's been about 2 months since I've really spent quality time near him, I'm confident he'll still be comfortable around me and my scent. I think I may try the Ziploc container idea and use that for him. He'll be sitting in my lap the entire way because I'm too worried about him sitting with anyone else with all the car vibrations. Should I try putting a small hide with the substrate so he can try and hide from all of it?

As for heat packs, I think I still have some of those hot packs that you open the package and usually keep in coat pockets. I could probably put a couple of those in a pillow case and put them under the container to keep him warm as well as with my body heat.

Scales n Tails is really the only reptile store anywhere near Denver/Aurora. The one I mentioned is closer to Denver/Lakewood. It really depends on the staff that happens to be on whether or not they're any good. If you go during the day, you're going to have much better luck talking to an adult that actually knows their stuff. They tend to have quite a few animals, and they're all fairly decent quality. Both of my Dumerils boas, and my anery corn came from them.

Wow, that sounds like a pretty good place then. Maybe I can pick up another corn snake as I have the space and money for them. I'll keep the place in mind, thanks so much. <3

Oh, and I clicked your egg. I have those little dragons on a different website. >w<
