Upgrading to 2 pinks, need a tip

World's Tallest Midget
I know, I know. Another feeding question! I thought I'd never be asking one of these!:sidestep:

I received my two hatchlings on Thursday. They had eaten the Sunday prior and were due for a feeding. They each jumped on a pinky mouse and had it down right away. Since these are my first snakes ever, I wasn't sure how big of a "lump" I should have been able to see.

The small lump I did see didn't stick around very long (even if what I was looking at was actually a lump...I'm not so sure). I have a strong feeling that they should be upgraded to 2 pinks because both hatchlings seemed to be cruising for more food after having already eaten. Can they eat 2 pinks even if each pinky is 1.5 times their size (it could be slightly smaller than that...I'm not a good judge of things like this).

I guess my question is timing. I was planning on waiting 4 days before feeding again (Monday), but if they were never "full" to begin with, should I feed 2 pinks tonight? Should I wait till Monday?

Thanks!

Awesome, thanks! That was quick and to the point...just what I was looking for.

I have also heard that if you don't see a lump while feeding then go to two pinkies per week. My question was, if you are feeding on say a Monday and you not see much of a lump do you go to feeding on say Friday to give them two meals in one week. While looking at the posts on this forum, I have seen the reply that says "go with two pinkies" and see how that works. Does that mean two per week like on Monday and Friday, or does that mean feed two pinkies both on Monday?

Just wondering. Thanks.

I fed each of the hatchlings two pinks tonight, and they took them without hesitation! I guess I have just one more question (its a two-parter):

If 2 pinkies are too much, would the snake have eaten them both, or would it regurge later?

I have a strong feeling that this was the right size meal. I'll cross my fingers!

Cool. Unfortunately, a snake might eat both, if it could handle it or not. I think they'll be all right if the temps are correct. :)

I have a temp gradient, although my cool side drops a little below 70 during the "coldest" part of night. Am I wrong to assume that the snake will move to the warmer side (or somewhere in the middle of the two; a happy medium) if the cool side is too cool?

You should shoot for low 70s on the cold end and low 80s on the warm side. Also remember that sometimes a snake will choose a secure hide over one that has better temps for digestion. Make sure there are snug hides at least at the gradient extremes, and maybe even in the middle too.

Agreed with Dean's post above. Also, if the size of your tank/viv allows for it, and if you're not too concerned with the aesthetics of it, a "half-pipe" of cardboard paper towel core works wonders for a "long hide" along a temperature gradient.

Sheesh, with all this pinkie consumption, you just might have to buy in bulk. ;)

unfortunately, my grey rat is still on pinks and he's as old as my cornsnake, Blaze. they were both hatched around sept 2005.
he's a puny little thing. he's finally eating two pinks. but at first, i would offer him two and he would only eat one. now he's eating two and finally putting on some weight. i'm hoping to get him off pinks and get him onto at least peach fuzzies soon.

Also, Kathy Love recommends in her book to feed two pinks versus one large pink or fuzzy. she says that it's easier for them to digest two smaller food items than one large one.

Jazzgeek: What a grand idea! I do believe I will look into that... :grin01:

Just wanted to update that it has been 24 hours after the first dual-pinky feeding, and things are going well. I did not want to deal with a regurge! Thanks again to everyone; the help is much appreciated.
