Was'nt me officer
Hi

Last night while i was out my girlfriend cleaned out all my tanks. She used standard household disinfectant..... I know this is bad but any ideas on how bad and what can i do to remedy the problem.. I do know that she watered it down and didnt use it neat.

I have a 5.5 foot corn, 1.5 foot corn, and 1.5 foot Royal Python

Can this be fatal or is it just something not advised... Also both the corns have gone into blue, i think this is due to the disinfectant

Unfortunately most domestic cleaning products are poisonous to reptiles and can be fatal. My suggestion would be to get them into alternative housing immediately as the residue from the cleaner will be giving off fumes. Not only will their skin be irritated, but they will be inhaling toxins as well. With limited physical exposure a shed will help them, but there won't be anything a vet can do otherwise. Get the snakes in a completely different room.

As alternative housing, try places like Staples or Homebase for the big plastic blanket storage tubs and drill holes in them for air circulation. "Really Useful Boxes" are one of the brands that some folks use.

Then buy a purpose-designed reptile-safe cleaning agent like Ark-Klens and clean each of the old tanks thoroughly, inside and out. Then leave them to dry, and repeat. Although I don't know how many repeats would give me peace of mind enough to use them again. Just rinsing with water wouldn't be enough for me.

As a matter of interest, which brand of cleaner did your other half use?

cant remember.. just some cheap stuff from a corner shop. She has definatly told me that she only used a drop with lots of water so i am hoping that with it being so diluted it souldnt cause too much problems.

To be honest, if it caused your Corns to go blue, then it's already causing a problem. Were they both due to shed anyway? It might just be an unfortunate coincidence.

Personally I'd still find them alternative housing and go over the "cleaned" tanks like a maniac with some safe stuff, but it's your call.

they both started going blue a few days before so i think thats ok. But yes i have spare tanks so i will stick them in them and get some elbow grease in the tanks

I think you should be fine as long as you move them temporarily and give the tanks a good proper whipe down. Ammonia is one of the more common disninfectants which is also found in urine so a slightly higher content isn't good for them but I doubt with the amounts we are talking that you are going to have instant cyanide death or anything.

I have gave both tanks a good clean.. The small snake has had its shed and looks tyotaly fine .. i am just waiting on the big snake to shed as it came out of blue 3 days ago so should be any time soon.
