Urgh..Mites!

Yesterday was snake feeding day at the store.... One out of 15 snakes has mites.. So far. The small juvenile Red Tail Boa. I think it's a female..Anywho I pulled it out and she was chock of full the little bloodsuckers. I don't get it. I cleaned out this cage, and she's been sprayed several times with mite stuff. Ivermectin is the name of it. Does that stuff even work?

I re-cleaned and disinfected all cage stuff twice. Soaked the snake in the other mite spray(can't remember what it's called) and again cleaned her off with slightly cool water.

The snake honestly looks pretty bad. I'm going to be completely honest here... The associates don't have any time to check every single snake daily. We usually water them quickly and have to get out to help customers. It really sucks.

Anywho , is the spray a daily spray? Could my snakes get mites from me touching them? And why didn't any of the other snakes have them? When I was feeding I checked them over and didn't see anything. I know that sometimes the smaller ones aren't as noticeable. Regardless I treated all snakes with the Ivermectin as requested.

Anything else I can do to help the snake??

HELP!

On a side note I still have other snakes to feed today when I get into work. I took care of a Yellow Rat snakes eyecap issue and still have to deal with the bitey Jungle Carpet, Amazon tree boa needs to be soaked, and I also have to do a first time feed with 6 baby Ball pythons.

I am in no way annoyed at the fact that I have to feed them. I don't mind it. I just want the managers to care about the issues as much as I do. I am trying to educate myself so I can better help the snakes and animals in the store stay healthy. If the store sells sick animals they get a bad reputation.

I've never had mites (hopefully won't get them, *knock on wood*), so my only input is, yes, your snakes can get mites if you go to handle them... It would be a good idea to change your clothes and take an entire shower, if possible, before you even go to handle other, presumably uninfected snakes at the store.. Of course, if this isn't possible, limit your handling of the infected snake, change any clothing it touches, and REALLY be careful with your hygiene. Wash your hands REALLY well between snakes to prevent transfer... Also, if the store has a quarantine area, it would be a really good idea to move the infected snake(s) completely from the area where the other reptiles are kept.

On a side note... A pet store that carries Yellow rat snakes, carpets, AND tree boas? In western Washington??? WOW! I thought it was freaky when the nearest reptile-oriented pet store got in a retic... Lol.

I know. I am going to have a MAJOR talk with my manager tomorrow. Argh.

And also the best part.. Change all your clothes before coming near your home collection.
When I go from my QT room to my herp room, I do change clothes.

But now, all my animals have gone past their QT time in that room. so I am pretty safe.
