Use a UTH? You'll want to read this.

I always have my uth under control of a thermostat.. ...Although the strange thing is..in Maize's tank on the warm side the thermometer reads 82..on Striker's warm side the thermometer reads 73...it's weird..their both the same UTH brand controlled by the same thermostat..so the readings should be the same...akward...I don't want to turn the heat up because then Maize's would be to hot..

Before I found this forum I put my uth on the bottom glass. Since going the threads on this forum I've come up with placing the uth on a piece of plexi glass that will fit it, and I don't tape it either. Since I use aquariums and stand I placed a sheet of thin metal across the fish stands shelving leaving an opening for electrical cord. I place the uth under the tank to one side place a thermometer on the glass on the inside of the tank above the uth. I use a rheostat I bought at home depot used for dimming table lamps. $10 compared to $22 at pet stores. Heating is much more uniform because it is not directly touching glass. And by not being on the tank glass itself I can move it or use it any I want.

Was it a new heat mat? used? Was it peeled off the bottom of a tank or some other surface? There are a lot of variables.

The heat mat was new last year and was only used about 2-3 months last winter mounted on a tile, which it is still attached to.

Directly on the glass is ok as long as you use a rheostat or thermostat. Thats how all of my tanks were set up, although the later ones I would leave the adhesive backing on and foil tape the UTH to the glass.

Yeah, but the temp difference would still make me nervous. Like susang said, what if the thermostat is reading on a cooler point. If you have it set for 80 degrees, it could still be 130 somewhere else? I know it's only one set of data, so I'm interested to see if blueapplepaste's uth does the same thing.

With a thermostat it usually will only be on for a few minutes at a time and I don't think even the "hot points", if any, would have time to get that hot.

Just a note, I left it on for 8 hours today and measured at hours 2.5, 5, and 8. Most points stayed close to what I posted yesterday but got slightly warmer as the day went on. At hour 8, the lowest temp was still in the same spot and was 91.5 degrees, but the highest point (still in that same spot) shot up to 160!
