UT Heater

MY UTH heater is registering at 89 degrees. (using my uber cool probe digi thermometer). My tank is at 76 on the cool side and 82 on the warm side.

Is this a good set up? My new snake comes soon and I want to make sure I'm getting this right.

Thanks!

hehe hey sweets, are you using a thermostat or rhetostat to regulate? cuz I would turn it down a bit especially if she can burrow and come in contanct with the glass.

where is the digital thermometer probe on the warm side? You need it to be at the substrate level, burried about half way down (not touching the glass but not resting on top of the substrate) and the warm side thermometer should read between 80 and 85 I keep mine closer to 85 especially after he eats (he needs warmth to digest). Im not understanding how your uth reads 89 and your warm side reads 82. why the 2 different temps? Also another thing you need for your uth is a rheostat or thermostat to control the amount of heat.

Hey there!

Ok, so I left the probe in the tank buried. Now its reading 107. I guess I should pull the UTH away from the bottom of the glass since I do have 1/4 inch clearance from the bottom of the tank to the tank stand. EEK! :(

Where do you get a rheostat to control the heat? I currently have a COBRA snake mat.

You can get a rheostat pretty cheaply from reptiledirect.com. The one they offer for 22.95 from ESU is super easy to use.

There a thread here on how to make your own rheostat , do a search you'll find it. Some folks here use a ceramic tile above the uth to prevent snake burn, I use folded paper towels. And the probe I lay on the substrate tuck in a little, that where the snake usually is.

Good Luck

If you stuck the UTH to the bottom of the glass it usually wont come off without ruining the UTH. the adhesive that they use is pretty permanant.

yeah you can build your own rheostat. All it is is a dimmer switch like one of those knobs that you turn to make the lights dim in your house, you can get em at walmart for less that 2 bucks. just hook that up to your UTH to make the temperature lower. (same concept as making a light bulb dimmer) I built one and it works, but the thing of it is I have to constantly adjust it to keep the same temp in the viv as the temp in my house vairies from day to night. a thermostat is definately better because it is automatic. (keeps the same temp in the viv no matter how hot or cold the outside temp is) I am working on building a thermostat but thats another project. If you are interested in building a rheostat for yourself I have the link for you.

It's a good thing I just used button stickers to place it against the glass! :) Thanks for the info!

If it's turned off, you might be able to dissolve the adhesive with a solvent like turpentine or baby oil, but I'd do a spot check first to make sure it won't melt the UTH itself. Also, you'll have to be extremely careful, and unless you're using mineral oil, do it outside or in a very well ventilated area.

haha.. yes I can :)

I did purchase a Rheostat today at Petsmart. Thanks to everyone who responded to me. I hope this makes a big difference. We shall see in a few hours. I'll keep you posted.

I really want to make sure I have my little snake comfortable and less stressed as possible when it arrives.
