UTH and Lamp?

So i was told that its a good idea to have a daytime lamp for the corn to bask in but that its not necessary if he has natural light. My corn is close to a window and gets natural light, but i mounted the uth on the side of the tank to avoid tarnish to my new desk so it seems to be a little colder at night (pushin 65 degrees Farenheit) is that ok for night time? and should i leave the lamp on a timer to keep him comfortable?

Most likely you don't need the lamp at all. Most people only use a UTH to provide a temperature gradient.

If you decide to go with only a UTH, most people put them underneath the tank. I'm not sure it'll do much good on the side. You can tape it to the bottom of the tank and then raise the tank up off the desk a little to give the UTH air flow and make sure it doesn't damage the desk. I do that using those little sliders you put under furniture to move it.

If you have a thermostat, you can use a ceramic heat emitter. UTH's are reccomended mostly, ut I use the emitter with a thermostat with no problem.

I know up here I have hard enough of a time keeping the humidity up around %30 without a heat lamp. I Used a regular florescent light on mine at first but ended up taking it off because he gets enough light and doesnt need it so I no longer use one at all.

thanks for all the help yall!! i took away the lamp like most said i could and he seems great, hes been movin back and forth between the sides so im pretty sure hes comfortable!

I don't like the heat lamps due to the fire danger.
I know a local breeder who says heat is heat, & that it will work just as good if it's on the side (back) of the enclosure. He puts the flexwatt on the back of the racks. I would guess it's the same as with tanks. As long as you have enough heat for them, I don't think it matters if it's on the bottom of the tank, or on the side. A thermostat is important either way.

thanks heather!! glad to hear that u found a place to keep your snakes for a while! good luck finding a place u can keep em all wit you!

Thank you :)
My new landlord doesn't seem to care about what species I have or how many. There's no restriction listed on the lease either.
Ever since I told him that I am looking for a place to rent until I can buy a house, he's been talking about selling me the house I am moving into. He's even going to see if he can figure out a way for me to buy this house before my 3yr waiting period is up. (After myshortsale on my other house, I was told I cannot apply for a mortgage for 3yrs.)

o wow thats awesome! it can def be hard to find a landlord willing to work wit u that much. my new lease doesnt have a deposit for caged animals so im pretty excited :] i hope you can figure out a way to get ur own place, that would def open up the doors for a bigger snake room hehe

No kidding! My lease just says "due to number of animals, pet deposit is $500 non refundable, instead of the normal $300". I paid twice that at the house I'm moving out of, & he listed the number & species of animals I had.

It would be cool if it worked out for me to buy this house, he said it's already permitted to add on, & since it's pretty tiny, I am brainstorming on how I would add on to make the house a little bigger. :)

(sorry to hyjack your thread)

wow tthats not too bad considering ur extensive list of pets though!! musta been a long list ha

that would def be an awesome option for you and it seems like a ton of ppl are great carpenters given some of the DIY projects so maybe someone can shoot u some ideas!!

dont worry bout the thread haha it was a pretty simple question that i got great advice on anyways :]

I didn't have the snakes when I moved into the house, but I still had several animals. :)

I already had a coworker offer to help when the time comes, & being in the emergency service field, I know several firefighters that do construction on the side, so I'm set for that, when the time comes.

Will do! I have a lot of cleaning to do, the former tenant was a smoker, even though they were not supposed to smoke in the house.
I will be painting the entire inside (which is good that the house is small) & using a primer/sealant before the paint, the carpets will be shampooed a couple times, before I move in.
After I get it all cleaned up, I'll post pics of my new, cute little house :)

You can see if the owner of the house will lease it to you with an option to buy with some of the lease money going towards the principle (selling price) of the house. We did this for 3 years on our first house and it worked out great. At the end of the 3 years, we bought it with nothing down and already had equity built up in the house. Good luck!!

You need to have the warmside reach 85 and the colder side can be lower. I think your snake is in serious trouble if you only have a UTH mounted on the side of the tank. They emit very little heat and your snake will not be able to digest its food. It is important for a snake to have a location where its belly can reach 85 in order to digest food.

thanks Johan, ive already moved the uth under the tank since everyone seemed to agree on that point haha
