UTH and Substrate questions

TrpnBils

22 is not enough snakes
I read somewhere yesterday that it's a good idea to keep the viv (I use a 10g aquarium for the time being) up off of the tabletop or wherever an inch or so to give the UTH room to "breathe." That's the first time I've read that in the 7 months I've been reading up on corns....any truth to it?

Also, for substrate, I've seen that newspaper can be used to make cleaning a little easier. Is there any reason not to use printed newspaper as opposed to just blank newspaper or butcher paper that you can usually pick up here or there?

Thanks!

I keep my uth on 3 pieces of cardboard so it can breath and not burn the table it sits on. I like to punch lots of little holes in the bardboard to help breath.

Printed news paper and butcher paper are no different in my oppinion. I like the plain paper because the ink in paper makes a mess if you spill the water dish. Just my 13 cents

hmm...okay, that raises another question then. If I'm only using newspaper as substrate it's obviously not going to dissipate the heat as much as a couple inches of bedding. I never really even considered the possibility that the UTH could burn the table...if it has that much heat, should I use something besides newspaper to avoid burning the snake when it's on the warm side of the tank?

I use aspen. It is about 15 dollars for enough to fill the tank with 2-4 inches about 20 times or more!!! I would use aspen. It also looks better than news paper

I'd like to, but I'm in a dorm room until May. I was always under the impression that you had to bake the aspen to kill any bacteria if it ever got wet or anything, and I don't have access to anything that'll work for that unless a microwave counts...lol.
