I bought my viv today and the guy from craigslist said the heat pad didnt get that hot, so i didnt need a thermostat. i told him i was getting one anyway but now i realized that it looks as if the heat pad was originally stuck to cardboard or something then stuck on the glass because there is cardboard stuck to it than thats stuck on glass and he taped it on. Do I have to buy a new heat pad now?

Unless that's the paper that came on it when it was new you'll have a hard time removing it from the heater. They're even hard to remove from the glass.
Maybe that was to keep the temp down in the viv. That may be why he said you don't need a thermostat.
Try soaking the cardboard and carefully scraping it with something non-metal(plastic spatula, guitar pic). You can use aluminum tape to secure it to the viv.

Most folks using an UTH leave the paper on the sticky part of the unit and then use some sort of tape to apply it to the bottom of a tank. this is doing to for several reasons ,mainly to remove it at a latter date.

As long as you think that the caedboard won't be a fire harzard it should be fine. I can't see it so I can tell.

i dont think it will be a fire issue since he had it like that before, but i think it might not get to its heat potential and maybe not warm enough due to the caked on carboard. idk but the carboard wont scrape off either.

Well what your down to is checking it out on your tank then, buy a thermometer with a probe first to see if it heats up then when it get over 90 degrees buy a thermostat to control the temp. If not buy a new uth and you still didn't waste any money.

yea i already have a thermometer with probe. im cleaning out the tank and all accesories now because they are very dusty. Then i will set up probe thermometer, hydrometer and all other stuff and plug in uth. I just bought by thermostat on ebay so i should get that in a week and my snake in two. thanks everyone, i will let you know what the temp get too after a couple hours plugged in

so, after being plugged in for only 30 minutes, it was already up to 119 degrees. Guess the carboard did nothing. I also broke my water bowl so now i have to buy a new one. thanks for everyones help

probably 1/8 of an inch and unremovable. it took like the first layer. and i just completed my terrarium. only thing is it has a locking lid but the back of the lid doesnt fit properly so if i push the lid forward with little strength the lid moves forward and has like a 1/2 inch of openness. i am gonna try and duct tape it so that the snake cant squeeze through

Did you have 119° through the cardboard and the glass?
Make sure your snake can't get stuck in any tape.

yea the uth is under the tank so he cant get stuck and yea thats what my probe thermometer says through the carboard and glass. I got it at petco.

Thanks, it's also nice to know that it will get that high even with cardboard between it. It's a good thing you ordered a thermostat.

i cant figure out this tape thing. no matter what it will have a opening if i pull it forward at all. ill post a pic in a minute of my viv and of my problem

when i do the duct tape thing and lock it, there is still a little room but not much and i have to pull decently hard to get that space. i am going to put a couple books or something on the top of the cage as well to make sure he cant escape. any other ideas? pics comin in a few
