the guy at alligator alley said it was unnesscairy and the snake will just sit on the spot for a few hours and burn him self, he also said red lights were bad and just reccomened a normal light, your views on this? i think all his information is not right.

A normal light only, what about at night your corn would have no "privacy" and willl get stressed. They can get burnt from a UTH thats too hot, which is why its best to use a thermostat or some sort of dimmer
 
Your corn definately needs an UTH for proper thermoregulation. There are many on the market today. As for a light, all you will need is day light that can put on timer (12hrs on 12hrs off). I wouldn't give any business to that store if they're telling you stuff like that. Take your business elsewhere to people who are actually knowledgeable and if you have more questions please post them and take a look and print out a few cornsnake caresheets.

oh and what is good, the guy said to put the themoeter on the middle and as long as its around 82-85 it says ,(its the stick on glass little sticker one) that your fine on both sides.

wrong again. Go to walmart they have a digital thermometer with hygrometer combo for about $15. I place it on the cool side, place probe in the hide on the warm side and i can monitor the temp on both sides along with the humidity.
A bit long....short answer get a digital thermometer measure temp on warm and cool side

Lots of folks don't use uth in fact some (not me) don't even heat there tanks just leave them at room temperature. I use a red bulb on one side all the time. No day time lighting just natural light. Keep looking at threads and you'll see lots of variations of vivs and setups.

I am under the impression that the proper kind of black, red, or blue light will be fine at nights .... allowing us to view ours corns with out disturbing their "dark time".
 
I use unregulated UTH's on ALL of my glass tanks...

I adjust the depth of substrate to create the proper surface temp, which I check with an IR digital thermometer.

Sometimes the snakes will burrow or "dig in" to get more warmth...but I have NEVER had a snake get burned. Doesn't mean it can't happen...but most UTH's don't get THAT hot...and they don't hot spot like hot rocks...

Lights have a tendancy to dry out the enclosure considerably...but they can work as well.
 
DEREK, you ahve heating element running without any type of control? Thats dangerous!!! Now I am goingto have to tell yourwife how much money you have spent with me..heheheheh

ALL my glass tanks (5 of them) are running FULL POWER all the time...
Of course...they only heat to 80-82 at the top of the substrate...which is only half inch to 3/4 thick...

They are MAYBE 90 on the glass...and I have never had an animal injured by any of them yet...so if it ain't broke...don't fix it...

Besides I have these damn things all over my house...the $600 worth of good tstats would mean I can't get my het albino BP's this week.

Well...I have a pair of CF BP's ordered...and a pair if Dumeril's Boas...
And a pair of Womas...

But I ran across this deal on a pair of 100% Het Albino BP's...the guy lives about 2 hours away...and really doesn't mind NOT shipping them...LOL...and is willing to guarantee them in writing...so I figured I would jump on it...

My wife doesn't know about them yet either...LOL

where is this information found??? I had a red light as the only lighting overnight and my snake went straight over to it.

it was outside the viv and there is a UTH so it wasnt the warmth or vibrations that attracted it.

any ideas????

Just because there is a UTH does not mean that your snake wasn't attracted to the heat of the red light.

A UTH is an indirect heat...while the light would be a much more direct source of heat...I would have to surmise that is the reason your snake was drawn to it.

A majority of animals cannot see red light...
