UTH....on the side??

Kahn's Mommy
I never really gave this a whole lot of thought when I peeled off the backing and stuck it on the side... but when I bought the UTH, it said it was preferred to stick it to the side of the tank to cut down risk of fire. Plus my vivs are on a plastic rack (the bf's media rack for his gaming systems has been turned into my snake rack...hehehehe :grin01: .) The warning label on the UTH said that if you place the viv on wood or plastic, put it on the side of the tank insead of underneath because theres a risk of melting the plastic (or damaging the wood.)

The temp is around 85 on the warm side and 75 on the cool side (I don't have a probe thermometer yet ( :-offtopic where can I buy one and about how much do they go for?)

I haven't seen a problem with the UTH on the side...Kahn seems active and healthy, but I wa just wondering of there were any long-term risks of having the heater on the side of the glass.

The heater is mounted about and inch/inch and a half above the aspen substrate line, so Kahn can cuddle against the warm glass after he eats...but he isn't snuggling against the heater itself. I don't want him to burn himself. :(

The norm is to place the UTH under the tank and raise the tank so that no harm will come of it. Above the UTH in the tank you should have bedding a probe of the thermometer and a hide for the warm side. A digital thermometer
w/probe is just a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer found almost anywhere. I use a digital thermometer with a probe that I bought at the pet store. My local store sell snake, fish, bird and such. I would suggest using a rheostat or better yet a thermostate with a UTH to help regulate the temps.

Good Luck

I don't think there would be any long term harm from having the UTH mounted on the side as long as the snake can get warm enough to digest. On a side note, however, I don't think having the heater mounted to the side would be very efficient, since heat rises. I think this would create a relatively small warm spot for your snake. If you have something to regulate your heat output, it is highly unlikely you would melt the plastic.

As for digital thermometers, like Lenny said, you can find them almost anywhere. I got all mine at Wal-mart, along with lamp dimmers to regulate the heat. Both together cost less than $20.

:-offtopic
I'm thinking out loud here, but I read that a few others folks have place UTH on the side too, like stated on this thread, snake resting against the glass. Wouldn't there be a chance of the snake burning himself more because now you don't even have bedding to help prevent a burn???
