UTH problem

I have a 10-gal glass aquarium set up and added a 10-20 gal UTH on the one end. We've been watching the temp and it's registering at 110 degrees on the bottom of the glass. I know this is dangerously too hot for any snake.

We have a friend with an UTH and you can put your hand on the bottom without it burning... is there a problem with our UTH? Should I take it off and get a smaller one? Should I put one on the side instead? Are these necessary or could a heat light from above provide enough warmth?

Ok, I think the problem may be the type of thermometer I was using. I chose this one because I thought it could go down into the bedding and get a better read than one of those stick on thermometers or one of those with a metal gauge. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3744+3921&pcatid=3921

My fiance just pulled one out of our refrigerator that is made to sit on a flat surface with a metal frame and now that is registering between 85-90 degrees.

We have the tank sitting almost an inch off the table so there's plenty of air flow around the UTH.

For those of you with temp. control devices attached to your UTH, can you please show me pictures! We are extremely limited around this area (only 1 LPS with a few reptile items). We visited every store that possibly would have electrical items and have had NO LUCK finding a dimmer to plug the UTH into.

A retrostat or a thermostat may help your situation.

Try a retrostat to lower the temperature of the UTH.

Thank you so much for the link, I'll definitely be getting one of those.

Just want to get the temp where it should be before I bring the little one home!

There is also a thread on here where you can make your own rheostat. If you are savy like that it is only $6 for materials and a little bit ofyour time

They build it yourself Rheo is really easy! Just need wirecutters, and a screwdriver!

The rest is really basic. Just pay attention to cord lengths on either side of the control box. I have made a few and love-em. Even sold a few for $7 ea at a friends pet shop before showing him how easy they are to make.

You may also find that getting a digital in/out thermometer with a probe will give you a more accurate temperature reading. Here's a couple of links, I know these are UK links but it will give you an idea of what you're looking for. There are many places online where you can buy this type of thermometer, it just needs to have a probe on it. I've even seen them for sale on e-bay, so that might be worth checking out if you find it hard to source things locally.

The probe is on a length of wire and you place the probe under the substrate, over the heat mat, which will then give you an accurate temperature reading of the hottest place your corn can get to.

Hope this helps you some, best wishes,
